Topic: Alnico

Alnico - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alnico alloys are composed primarily of cobalt, nickel, and aluminium with the addition of iron, copper, and sometimes titanium.
Alnico magnets produce magnetic field strength at their poles as high as 1500 gauss, or about 3000 times the strength of the earth's magnetic field.
Alnico magnets are used in electric motors, sensors, loudspeakers, and cow magnets.

Alnico is largely comprised of Iron, Cobalt, Aluminum, and Nickel with trace amounts of other elements used to tailor the alloy’s magnetic and mechanical properties.
Alnico magnet alloy is a mature technology and is manufactured by casting or sintering.
Alnico also has a low Energy Product (BHmax) when compared to the Rare Earth magnet alloys, even though their Residual Inductions (Br) are comparable.

Alnico Magnets - Magna Works Technology
Alnico magnets are excellent choices for applications involving vibration and shock as they have good resistance to demagnetization.
To obtain optimum performance of Alnico 5 the magnetic length should be approximately 5 times the diameter for rods, or for rectangular magnets length should be 5 times diameter of an equivalent circle.
Alnico magnets are derived from Aluminum, Nickel and Cobalt used in their manufacture.

 Arnold - Alnico Magnets
Alnico also boasts the lowest temperature coefficient of any commercial magnet material (.02% per degree centigrade) allowing for excellent stability over a wide temperature range.
Alnico has experienced renewed interest in recent years in such temperature-sensitive applications as hall-effect and MR-based automotive and electronic sensors, in addition to the traditional magnetron, TWT amplifiers, actuators, motors and instruments applications that have long relied upon Alnico.
The most efficient use of Alnico requires that it be magnetized after the magnet has been assembled with its pole pieces into the final magnetic circuit.

Alnico is hard and brittle (45-55 Rockwell C), and is not suitable for drilling, tapping or conventional machining operations.
Typical alnico 5 applications require a long magnetic length to pole surface ratio (usually 4:1 or greater) to insure good magnetic performance.
Alnico 5 is the grade most widely used but we also stock alnico 2, 5-7, 8 and 9.

 Scotty Moore Alnico V
Use of an alnico V magnet isn't particularly unique (Gibson has used the same magnet on several pickups) but that name has always stuck with that pickup.
Rather than have a long rectangular magnet at the core of the pickup on which metal polepieces (typically screws) are attached and consequently magnetized, Lover designed this pickup with long alnico V magnets operating as the polepieces.
That's why you see so few guitars equipped with original Alnico V pickups - - it was only available on a few high end models (which are always produced in lower quantity) from 1954 through early 1957.

Alnico cost up to ten times as much as ceramic per unit.
For all the discussion of alnico vs ferrite, I am just wondering what the cost really is, and how much more expensive it would make the speaker.
However, I do remember that AlNiCo can be demagnetized far more easily than ferrite, which is why much taller magnets are required for the same purpose, even though they're stronger per unit of cross-sectional area.
