 Alnilam (Epsilon Orionis)
Alnilam is a blue-white supergiant that for many years has served as a standard star against which to compare others.
Like most supergiants, Alnilam is rapidly shedding mass: a powerful stellar wind blowing from its surface at speeds up to 2,000 km/s and carrying way about two millionths of a solar mass per year (20 million times the rate lost by the Sun).
Though only about four million years old, Alnilam is already fusing heavy elements in its core and doomed to explode, in the next million years or so, as a supernova.

 eSky: Orion's Belt
Both Alnilam and Alnitak are supergiants, and Mintaka, while not quite as massive as its companions, is still a true giant.
The central star, Alnilam, is much more distant than either of these, lying on the edge of the Orion Molecular Cloud more than 1,300 light years from the Solar System.
Alnilam is the most massive and luminous of the three stars, so that despite its greater distance it still shines more brightly than its two companions.

Cahill has trouble (as the reader might well have) making sense of the esoteric message of Alnilam, but he feels drawn to its followers and is in turn seen by them as a kind of totem figure, whose arrival was prophesied by his lost son.
The mystery of Alnilam is too vague to engage us, and the planned demonstration of its power is too weakly anticipated and too mechanically carried out to have the impact one longs for.

New Georgia Encyclopedia: James Dickey (1923-1997)
This idea eventually developed into the novel Alnilam (1987), which uses parallel columns of text to narrate from both a blind and a sighted man's point of view.
Alnilam was a serious and ambitious effort that was widely if unenthusiastically reviewed.
Oddly, the vitality that Dickey seemed unable to achieve in his last major book of poetry, The Eagle's Mile, clearly left a mark on his last novel, To the White Sea (1993), about a tail gunner's struggle for survival after his B-29 is shot down over Tokyo during a bombing mission in 1945.

Though all three stars have similar colors, classes, and temperatures, Alnilam, a hot B (B0) bright supergiant, is notably the most luminous: it is brightest even though farthest away, half again farther than the other two (which lie at nearly the same distance, about 870 light years).
From Alnilam's measured (though rather uncertain) distance of 1340 light years, it spectacularly radiates (after correction for its great amount of ultraviolet light) 375,000 solar luminosities from its 25,000 Kelvin surface, and is so hot that it illuminates its own (faint) nebulous cloud from the surrounding interstellar gases.
Alnilam has served for many years as a "standard star" against which to compare others.

Even if Encke and Alnilam set with nine minutes of one another this period is unlikely to overlap with the time of the crash.

 Alnilam Summary Study Guide
Deliverance (1970), which is filled with cinematic metaphors and tightly constructed around a plot of physical actions in a picturesque landscape, seemed almost destined for the successful movie treatment it received two years after publication.
However, in its length, its use of typographical devices that depend on print, and its interior monologue of a blind diabetic, Alnilam seems almost deliberately uncinematic.
Nor did the failure of the book to become a popular success encourage producers to adapt it, and Alnilam has not, to date, been made into a film.
