  Alnitak (Zeta Orionis)
The left hand star in Orion's Belt, the fifth brightest in the whole of Orion, and (in terms of apparent magnitude) the brightest O star in the sky.
Like all O stars, Alnitak is a source of X-rays that seem to come from a stellar wind that blows from its surface at nearly 2,000 km/s; the X-rays are produced when blobs of gas in the wind crash violently into one another.
Alnitak is probably only about 6 million years old and will eventually become a red supergiant before exploding as a supernova.

 Alnitak / Zeta Orionis 3
Alnitak is the easternmost of the three stars of Orion's Belt, with Alnilam in the center and Mintaka in the west.
Alnitak lies in a region crowded with several dusty clouds of interstellar gas actively forming new stars, including the famous "Horsehead Nebula" to the south.
Alnitak Aa is a blue supergiant star of spectral and luminosity type O9.7 Ibe (with "peculiar" emission lines), where O-type stars are the hottest stars in the spectral sequence excluding white dwarfs.

The region around Alnitak is remarkable as well, containing several dusty clouds of interstellar gas, including the famed "Horsehead Nebula" to the south.
Like all O stars, Alnitak is a source of X-rays that seem to come from a wind that blows from its surface at nearly 2000 kilometers per second, the X- rays produced when blobs of gas in the wind crash violently into one another.
Alnitak is probably only about 6 million years old (as opposed to the Sun's 4.5 billion year age) and it has already begun to die, hydrogen fusion having ceased in its core.

When Alnitak and Saiph were in vertical alignment, the angle between the 'belt' stars Alnitak and Alnilam was 46 degrees and the angle between Alnitak and Mintaka, 49.6 degrees.
Alnitak and Saiph were in vertical alignment with the angle of the 'belt' stars closely matching the three pyramids at Giza, not on the meridian due south, but somewhere in the south eastern sky as Orion was rising.
Alnitak, the star that corresponds to G1 in the OCT, was at 45 degrees altitude as it reached its highest point in the sky due south.

Alnitak is the left most belt star of Orion.
Another reason it is a good staring point is because right next to Alnitak is a nebula that will help you gauge the conditions of the skies and whether or not an attempt to see the Horsehead nebula is even worth your time.
Because of its proximity to bright Alnitak, and its visibility being dependent on the sky conditions, this nebula is easy to overlook.

 MLO PPP notes
Since I have always been leery of putting alnitak on the internet, vega does not advertise this link (no traffic is routed between vega's interfaces.) This is still the case, but now rigel.sdsu.edu is connected to alnitak's ethernet interface.
The basic design was to have the "ethernet" segment at MLO be a 16 node subnet (network 130.191.225.32, netmask 255.255.255.240) so that alnitak could route traffic between it's ppp0 interface and it's le0 interface.
This meant that alnitak had to be configured to arp for this IP for other hosts on the 130.191.225.32 network.

By this time the resouces of the entire Alnitak system were dedicated to running the simulation, with Herne effectively no more than a shell surrounding the simulation of Xyloplax which was now preparing to attack Metasoft.
