 Railway Society - Aln Valley - Press Releases
A planning application has been lodged by the Aln Valley Railway Trust this week to convert the station cottages at Alnmouth on the East Coast mainline into a visitor centre and holiday accommodation.
Alnwick Station is a Grade II listed building and would become easily the most imposing station of any of the Heritage Railways in Britain.
It does seem as though the whole question of upgrading Alnmouth station, and of who should undertake it, is still undecided.

In 1995 The Aln Valley Railway Society was formed to campaign for the restoration of the train service between Alnmouth and Alnwick.
Notes: The three mile long Alnmouth to Alnwick branch railway was authorised by Act of Parliament granted to the Newcastle and Berwick Railway on 31st July, 1845.
The Alnwick branch was well used with 60 trains a day using the station by the end of the century but by the 1920's passenger numbers began to decline with the increase in car ownership.

 Some interesting stuff about Alnwick
For many centuries before and after, the major settlement in the lower basin of the Aln river would be Lesbury (near where Alnmouth railway station is now).
The town of Alauna which he mentions by it could have been either Alnmouth or Alnwick.
However its history goes back further -- bronze instruments and Roman coins have been dug up, and Claudius Ptolemy (the 2nd century Egyptian geographer) referred to the river, which he thought of as the only one between Forth and Wear.
