The unassuming town of ALNWICK (pronounced "Annick"), thirty miles north of Newcastle and four miles inland from Alnmouth, is renowned for its castle - seat of the dukes of Northumberland - which overlooks the River Aln immediately to the north of the town centre.
Alnwick itself is an appealing market town of cobbled streets and Georgian houses, centred on the old cross in Market Place, site of a weekly market (Saturdays) since the thirteenth century.
Alnwick's main hotel is the White Swan, on Bondgate Within (tel 01665/602109; £70-90), where you might want to pop in at least for coffee - there's a comfortable lounge, while the hotel's fine panelled dining room was swiped from an old ocean liner, the Olympic, the twin of the Titanic.

During the next century, Alnwick was heavily involved in the on-off disputes and raids of the Scottish King, William the Lion (who was captured at Alnwick while riding too close to the castle in the fog) and also King John of England, who visited the castle on several occasions.
In 1252, King Henry III of England visited Alnwick on his return from Scotland, but Eustace's grandson, John de Vescy, again joined a rebellion against the English Crown under Simon de Montfort and he fought at the Battle of Lewes and was injured at the Battle of Evesham in 1265.
Alnwick had fallen into some disrepair by this time and part of it was being used as a school.

In 1172 and again in 1174, Alnwick Castle was besieged by the Scottish king William the Lion, both times successfully defended by a garrison led by William de Vescy.
And during his baronetcy, Alnwick Castle remained the focal point of ongoing conflict between Scotland and England, culminating in the unsuccessful attack in 1297 by William ("Braveheart") Wallace.
Today, Alnwick Castle is an impressive stately home, and relics of its initial military origins are clearly visible in the basic design, battlements, and massive fortitude of the structure.
