The district was formed on April 1, 1974 as a merger of the urban districts of Alnwick and Amble and the rural districts of Alnwick and Rothbury.
Alnwick Infirmary has a small Accident and Emergency department, however the main one for the District is located in Ashington at the Wansbeck General Hospital, some 25 miles south of Alnwick town.

The 1993 decision was popular in Alnwick because it would mean that the existing Safeway would have some competition (they have the only english supermarkets north of Ashington) and perhaps lower its prices which are higher than most other supermarkets.
On 4 August 1999 Judgement in the case of Alnwick District Council v Secretary of State for the Environment Transport and the Regions was handed down.
Alnwick was not alone in granting permission for such development at that time.

Obviously the magazine journalists didn't visit Alnwick during a week when RAF Tornado bombers and unspecified American fighters buzz the town during exercises to practise their skills in bombing foreign civilians (which is why they fly over this town).
Alnwick IS actually the County town of Northumberland, but the fact is that its neighbour Morpeth has effectively taken that title for itself.
Alnwick doesn't have a main Post Ofice, a Gas showroom, an Electricity showroom (or similar major shop) and the ony reason it still has a maternity unit is because the local people put their hands in their pockets and paid for a new one themselves.
