His successor, Raymond du Puy de Provence, established the first significant Hospitaller infirmary near to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
After the fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem (Jerusalem itself fell in 1187), the Knights were confined to the County of Tripoli and when Acre was captured in 1291 the order sought refuge in the Kingdom of Cyprus.
His successor Fulkes de Villaret executed the plan, and on August 15, 1309 after over two years of campaigning, the island of Rhodes surrendered to the knights.

Alof de Wignacourt 's name is famous for the 'aqueduct' which brought water from the springs of Bingemma to the City, and which took four years to build (1610-14) at a cost of £35,200 of those days, and most of which he paid out of his own purse.
Antoine de Paul (1623-26) founded the new town called after him (Paola), planned San Anton Gardens, and invited the celebrated engineer Floriani to build a second line of defences for Valletta, that is why the well known suburb is called Floriana.
Moreover in 1789, when de Rohan was Grand Master, the French Revolution robbed the Order's properties in France, French knights fled to Malta, and the num­ber of Jacobins (full of the idea that the Revolution was to make France a bigger Nation) increased in Malta, and brought many quarrels among the Knights.

Wignacourt is also holding a rosary bead in his left hand.
Very interesting is the detail of the rosary, which shows that there is a skull included in the beads, thus to remind the user of that bead that death is not to be afraid off, but something that one needs to be contemplate about it all the time.

As Grand Master of the Knights of St John of Malta, Alof de Wignacourt was head of a military order and a sovereign state, and he commissioned this portrait and maybe the second which was probably the model for St Jerome.
The page in charge of Wignacourt's plumed helmet and cloak stands a little awkwardly within the composition, and his lively features would make him an attractive subject of his own right.
As a reward for this painting Wignacourt gave the painter an honorary knighthood, but within three months the relationship had deteriorated and Caravaggio had fled in disgrace.

This Tower is the first of a number of coastal defence towers built round Malta.
It was built at the expense of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt in1610 and designed by the Maltese architect Vittorio Cassar.
From 1610 to 1649, Wignacourt Tower was Malta's northernmost defensive outpost until St Agatha's Tower was built in Mellieha.

This picture shows part of the remains of the Wignacourt Aqueduct that runs through a busy part of the sprawling city between Birkirkara and Hamrun.
Designed in 1610, it was finally commissioned in 1615 by the Grandmaster Alof de Wignacourt who funded part of the construction with his own money.
At the time it began operating, the aqueduct brought approximately 1,400 cubic metres of water each day from Rabat to Valletta, supplying about 30,000 people.
