  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Alonzo de Alvarado
America, and went to Peru with Pedro de Alvarado in 1534.
While charged by some contemporaries with avarice and cruelty, it is undeniable that during the trying period of civil wars in Peru (about 1537 to 1555) Alvarado was an unflinching and determined adherent to the interests of Spain.
At Chuquinga, in 1554, Alvarado suffered a signal defeat at the hands of the insurgents.

Andres Hurtado de Mendoza, marquess of Canet, who became viceroy of Peru in 1655, bestowed on Fernandez the office of chronicler of Peru; and in this capacity he wrote a narrative of the insurrection of Francisco Hernandez Giron, of the rebellion of Gonzalo Pizarro, and of the administration of Pedro de la Gasca.
We first hear of him (before 1445) as a captive of the Barbary Moors in the western Mediterranean; while among these he- acquired a knowledge of Arabic, and probably conceived the design of exploration in the interior of the continent whose coasts the Portuguese were now unveiling.
He was personally known to Gomes Eannes de Azurara, the historian of this early period of Portuguese expansion; and from Azuraras language it is clear that Fernandez revelation of unknown lands and races was fully appreciated at home.

Many of the whites, (especially the poorest,) forsake their houses, and live the greater part of the year in their little plantations of indigo and cotton, where they can venture to work with their own hands; which, according to the inveterate prejudices of that country, would be a disgrace to them in the town.
Lopez de Aguirre, whose crimes and adventures form some of the most dramatic episodes of the history of the conquest, proceeded in 1561, from Peru, by the river Amazon to the island of Margareta; and thence, by the port of Burburata, into the valleys of Aragua.
