Alor is the largest island in the Alor archipelago located at the eastern-most end of the chain of islands that runs through southern Indonesia, which from the west include such islands as Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Komodo, Flores Solor and Lomblen.
Aside from the two languages Alor / Alorese and Kalabahi Malay, which are both Austronesian languages, all of the languages spoken on the island of Alor are Papuan languages otherwise known as non-Austronesian languages.
Transport to Alor during the wet season is sometimes disrupted due to high winds and large waves.

The islands west of Wetar, namely Alor, Pura, and Pantar, sometimes referred to as the Alor Archipelago, are geologically part of a string of volcanic islands that extend west through Flores, Indonesia and belong to the Asian continent.
East of Alor, the islands of Atauro, Wetar, Reong, Nyata, and Romang are all part of the Australian Plate (Timor and Kissar are also grouped here, but are not inhabited by A. inconstans).
But to the west, on the volcanic islands of the Alor Archipelago, the forms of A. inconstans lack the fl dot protoconch; instead, they have either light or white embryonic whorls.

The first part of my research on Alor was taken up by doing a linguistic survey of eight languages in the western part of Alor island, and two from the nearby island of Pantar.
There are only two Austronesian languages in the Alor archipelago, which are Alor and Kalabahi Malay, all of the other languages are non-Austronesian.
Adang is the largest language on Alor, so it is not surprising that it may be learnt or at least understood by people from nearby language communities.

All of the languages in this project are previously undescribed non-Austronesian languages spoken in the Alor archipelago in south-eastern Indonesia.
Klon is spoken by approximately 5,000-6,000 people in the western part of Alor island, Abui by approximately 16,000 people in central Alor, and Teiwa by approximately 5,000 people in the eastern part of Pantar island.
On the islands of Alor and Pantar there is a very high level of bilingualism in the local variety of Malay; local languages are generally afforded low status in their speech communities and are regarded as ‘backward’ by residents in town.
