On 28 October 1999 the squadron was reactivated at AFB Bloemspruit to as an attack helicopter squadron, equipped with the new Rooivalk.
Alouette IIIs were received in 1962, with A flight stationed in Pretoria and B Flight at Bloemfontein, while C Flight and Training Flight remained at Ysterplaat.
The Alouette III was added to the fleet in 1978 and the squadron continued to operate the Alouette III when the Wasp was retired in 1990, with the Puma joining the fleet when 22 Squadron was amalgamated with 30 Squadron at the end of 1991.

In March 1991 it was announced that the Alouette III would be replaced by a lighter type of helicopter.

The Alouette III was developed by Sud Aviation to replace the Alouette II It takes again the principal dynamic components in a vaster and careened cell increasing its field of application.

This Alouette is being restored in the French Rescue version Sécurité Civile, for the youngest.

Although the Alouette III lacked the modern ‘mast-mounted’ sighting equipment which allows a helicopter to remain in a hull-down position, protected from enemy observation and ground fire, it could still stand-off and wait for the moment to use its firepower to optimum effect.

The Alouette III is an enlarged development of the Alouette II series, and was Aerospatiale's most successful helicopter in terms of numbers built until the mid 1980s when surpassed by the Ecureuil.
Compared with the Alouette II, the Alouette III is larger and seats seven, but in its initial form was also powered by the Turboméca Artouste turboshaft.
This initial SE-3160 Alouette III remained in production for almost a decade until 1969, when it was replaced by the improved SA-316B with strengthened transmission and a greater max takeoff weight, but the same Artouste III turboshaft.

That is a standard colour for all non-combatant helicopters (including the SAR Alouettes) which was introduced when deliveries of MBB Bo-105C were made in August 75-76, the latter being delivered in 539 IR/RAL 6014.The IR code refers to the fact that it was an infra red reflecting paint.
For the modellers amongst you  interested in the Alouette it is recommended that you  check out Max Decals latest offerings  (sheet 7204), a decal sheet covering the subject matter displayed(almost)  here but also many more.
If you are interested in building some of the options for the Alouette in 1:72 from the Max Decal sheet  you will need to scratch build a pair of floatation bags.

The Alouette III featured in this book is in white UN paint scheme with fl markings.
By using the close-up fl and white detail photos in conjunction with the wider angle colour photos it is possible for the modeller to figure out most if not all of the details on this chopper.
I believe this book would be of an asset to anyone building an Alouette III and in need of walkaround photos.

The serials were always hard to make out on helicopters - it was painted in fl paint just to the rear of the foot step and to the front of the rear undercarriage legs on the curved bit of the bottom/side fuselage.
After UDI a large number of Alouette IIIs were covertly obtained from various sources: 4 delivered in 1968, 5 new-build examples in 1972, 8 in 1974-75, 3 in 1978 and 19 ex-Portuguese AF examples abandoned in Mozambique after independence.
Up to 30 SAAF Alouette IIIs were also serving in Rhodesia at any one time in the last few years before the end of the war.

 RNLAF to receive new color schemes
The first KDC-10 already fly´s in it´s new color and the Alouettes were seen in a nice shiny blue scheme.
The four remaining Alouette IIIs, mainly used as Royal flights, were painted in a shiny bleu color schema.
Because of it´s task the RNLAF roundel is surrounded by a orange circle, referring to the Royal colors.
