Since driving was provisionally resumed, the two tunnel boring machines together have travelled a total of 302.8 metres, Gabi I 134.1 m in the east tunnel and Gabi II 168.7 m in the west tunnel.
At a meeting held on November 2, 2004, between AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd., the Amsteg Lot 252 Gotthard Base Tunnel North (AGN) Consortium and the Swiss Accident Insurance Fund (SUVA) it was decided to suspend mechanical driving in both tunnels.
The AlpTransit Gotthard Company and the Canton of Uri as partners acknowledge the new situation and have agreed to modify the structure of the exhibition building as well as to redefine the responsibilities for operation of the visitor centre.

 Gotthard Base Tunnel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tunnel is part of the Swiss AlpTransit project, also known as 'New Railway Link through the Alps NRLA' which also includes the Lötschberg Base Tunnel between the cantons of Berne and Valais.
Like the Lötschberg tunnel, it is intended to bypass winding mountain routes and establish a direct route suitable for high speed rail and heavy freight trains.
Responsible for the construction is the AlpTransit Gotthard AG, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB-CFF-FSS).

Last trainload of excavated rock for Uri lakefill project
In the last three years, AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd has delivered 2.4 million tonnes of rock excavated from the Gotthard Base Tunnel for the Canton of Uri's lakefill project.
Now that driving by boring machine in the east tunnel of the Gotthard Base Tunnel at Amsteg is complete, transportation of excavated rock from the NRLA to Flüelen was concluded on July 14, 2006.
