ALPENA -- While browsing the Internet last summer, an Alpena County official chanced upon a report of what Boeing Co. was looked for in locating a $900-million aircraft plant.
He said officials from the county, the City of Alpena and from Alpena and Wilson townships, which often are at odds with each other, worked long hours over a weekend to prepare it.
Alpena is now one of scores of cities in 22 states vying for the plant.

 Story: Railroad Origins in Alpena, Michigan
Research from Sanborn Insurance maps [SML] from 1895 suggest that the Alpena Northern originated on the north/east side of the Thunder Bay River, at the foot of Merchant Street.
Alpena had about 12,000 residents in 1895, making it a fairly large Michigan city at the time.
The Alpena and Northern was sold to the Detroit and Mackinac Railway on April 16, 1895.

 Seeing The Light - Alpena Breakwater Lighthouse
The town at the head of Thunder Bay that would eventually become known as Alpena was first laid out in 1840, and named "Animickee," Chippewa for "Thunder" in honor of the Chippewa Chief with whom Henry R Schoolcraft signed the 1826 treaty through which the government obtained the land and its forest and mineral bounty.
A new Sixth Order lens was ordered, and on its installation in the Alpena Light in April, 1889, the Fourth Order lens was returned to Detroit for storage, where it remained in storage until the completion of the Two Harbors station in 1892.
Alpena is the home of the popular annual Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival, and thus it is likely that with so many lighthouse buffs coming into town every Fall, the little Alpena light is fast becoming one of the most photographed lights in the Great Lakes area!
