Alpena County is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan.
Alpena County is in the northeast of the mitten-shaped Lower Peninsula of Michigan.
Lake Huron and Thunder Bay are to the east, Alcona County to the south, Oscoda County to the southwest, Montmorency County to the west, and Presque Isle County to the north.

Alpena had to furnish her proportion of soldiers for the purpose of suppressing the rebellion, and about thirty of her citizens were taken at various times for that purpose.
It is bounded on the east by Thunder Bay and Lake Huron; on the north by Presque Isle; on the west by the unorganized county of Montmorency (at present attached to Alpena county); on the south by Alcona county; Oscoda county touches it at the southwest corner.

Alpena, county seat for Alpena County, is located on Thunder Bay on Lake Huron’s northwestern coastline at the mouth of the Thunder Bay River.
Alpena was platted in 1856 by George N. Fletcher and 3 colleagues from Detroit, naming it Fremont.
Because there was already a city in Michigan with that name, however, it was renamed Alpena, (which is Indian for "partridge") at the suggestion of Michigan Statesman Henry R. Schoolcraft, after he observed many of the fowl in the area.

 Seeing The Light - Alpena Breakwater Lighthouse
The town at the head of Thunder Bay that would eventually become known as Alpena was first laid out in 1840, and named "Animickee," Chippewa for "Thunder" in honor of the Chippewa Chief with whom Henry R Schoolcraft signed the 1826 treaty through which the government obtained the land and its forest and mineral bounty.
By the close of the 1850's, the cry of lumbering interests rose to push for improvements at the growing settlement, and in late 1857 a group of influential lumber barons signed a petition requesting that the Federal Government appropriate funds for the construction of a pier and lighthouse at the river mouth.
Alpena is the home of the popular annual Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival, and thus it is likely that with so many lighthouse buffs coming into town every Fall, the little Alpena light is fast becoming one of the most photographed lights in the Great Lakes area!

Alpena had about 12,000 residents in 1895, making it a fairly large Michigan city at the time.
The Alpena and Northern was sold to the Detroit and Mackinac Railway on April 16, 1895.
There are proposed drawings in the State of Michigan Archieves of the BCGandA crossing the DandM and proceeding south to the lake front, but we are unsure as to whether this line was built south of what is now the DandM yard.

Citizens of Alpena requested TOSC assistance in addressing the investigation and remediation of a large cement kiln dust (CKD) waste pile located along the western shore of Lake Huron, on Thunder Bay.
The objectives are to investigate the potential effects of the CKD pile on fish and macroinvertebrate communities of Thunder Bay, as well as to evaluate the physical and chemical effects of the CKD material on surrounding surface and ground water.
TOSC provided assistance to the Alpena, Mich., community concerning the investigation of the cement kiln dust pile by National Gypsum Corporation, under oversight by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
