We present time-series photometry in BVRI of several spotted G-K stars in the Alpha Persei open cluster.
Such stars are known to have anomalous colors, particularly but not exclusively in B-V, which need to be accounted for in the determination of cluster distances from main-sequence fitting.
We describe a method for correcting the anomalous colors once vsini or the rotation period is known, and provide a new measurement of the distance and age of Alpha Persei.

His thesis was entitled "Low-mass Membership of the Open Clusters Alpha Persei and IC 4665." While at UCSC, Charles primarily worked with Burton Jones and Robert Kraft, and he maintained collaborations with them throughout his too-brief career.
The main goal for that grant was a multi-wavelength observational study of the nearest open clusters in order to develop better (more complete, to lower masses) membership lists for those clusters and to use the new data for the cluster members to constrain theoretical evolutionary models of low mass stars.
Charles was the world's expert on the Alpha Persei cluster, with most of the known members of the cluster having been identified by him from his proper motion membership studies or from deep, CCD imaging surveys.

Spectroscopic radial velocities for several nearby open clusters suggest that spectra of (especially earlier-type) rapidly rotating stars are systematically blueshifted by 3 km/s or more, relative to the spectra of slowly rotating ones.
Comparisons with astrometrically determined radial motions in the Hyades suggests this to be an absolute blueshift, relative to wavelengths naively expected from stellar radial motion and gravitational redshift.
Analogous trends are seen also in most other clusters studied (Pleiades, Coma Berenices, Praesepe, Alpha Persei, IC 2391, NGC 6475, IC 4665, NGC 1976 and NGC 2516).

A comparison of the Pleiades to the Alpha Persei cluster shows that most Alpha Persei stars have Li abundances comparable to their Pleiades counterparts, but there is a significant fraction (about 30%) of Alpha Persei stars that lie below the Pleiades in N(Li) by 1 dex or more.
If these stars are bona fide Alpha Persei members (and they probably are), their Li abundances strain our understanding of Li depletion.
The Pleiades, considered together with Alpha Persei and the Hyades, shows that stars with [Fe/H] >= 0.0 and which are more massive than about 1.25 M(sun) do not deplete Li prior to reaching main the sequence.

The shape of the light curves suggests that the photometric variations are most often dominated by a single group of cool spots located at intermediate or high latitude on the stellar surface.
Assuming that starspots are good tracers of the stellar magnetic field, the smooth light curves indicate the existence of a large scale, slowly varying magnetic structure at the surface of these ultrafast rotators.

In order to investigate the large discrepancy between the companion star fraction (csf) of young T Tauri stars and older field stars and to study the role of binarity in stellar rotational evolution, we have conducted a 2.2 \mum speckle imaging survey of 106 members of the young (50-70 Myr) open cluster \alpha Persei.
Further analysis of the \alpha Persei data will cover a wider separation range, allowing an investigation of the distribution of binary separations.
