Diagnostic Tests — Enhanced Alpha Fetoprotein Tests
Your blood is drawn for this test sometime between your 15th and 20th weeks of pregnancy.
The blood is tested for three protein and hormone levels: maternal serum alpha fetoprotein (MSAFP), unconjugated estriol (uE3), and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
Your doctor needs to weigh you on the day you have your blood drawn and ask when your last period began or what your expected due date is. The analysis of the results will take into account your weight and stage of pregnancy to determine whether the levels are normal.

The triple screen is a blood test typically performed between 15 and 20 weeks of pregnancy to detect women whose pregnancies may be at higher risk for three types of problems: open neural tube defects (such as spina bifida, an opening in the spine); Down syndrome and trisomy 18 (chromosome abnormalities).
The triple screen measures the levels of three chemicals in the mother’s blood; two are hormones produced by the placenta, and the other is alpha fetoprotein (AFP), a protein made in the baby’s liver and secreted into the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby.
All three chemicals cross the placenta and enter the mother’s bloodstream, where they can be measured.
