 Glycoprotein main page
The glycoprotein hormones are a family of cystine rich proteins consisting of an alpha and beta subunit.
The alpha subunit is common to each of the hormones for a given species.
The glycoprotein hormones are characterised by there heavy glycosylation and are cystine rich molecules with 5 conserved disulphides in alpha and 6 in beta.

 REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY: ON FOLLICLE-STIMULATING HORMONE
FSH shares an identical alpha-subunit with three other glycoprotein hormones: luteinizing hormone, which induces testosterone production in males and the final maturation of oocytes and subsequent ovulation in females; thyroid-stimulating hormone, which regulates thyroid function; and chorionic gonadotropin, which signals pregnancy.
The structure shows that both hormone subunits are involved in determining the specificity of binding to the appropriate receptor, but that both charge and stereochemistry dictate specificity, with a role for alpha-subunit amino acids primarily in the stereochemical attributes.
Although the nature of FSH and other glycoprotein hormones has been known for more than 30 years, there is still no orally active therapeutic drug.

 Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone
The alpha subunit of TSH is also present in two other pituitary glycoprotein hormones, follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, and, in primates, in the placental hormone chorionic gonadotropin.
TSH is a glycoprotein hormone composed of two subunits which are non-covalently bound to one another.
Secretion of thyroid-releasing hormone, and hence, TSH, is inhibited by high blood levels of thyroid hormones in a classical negative feedback loop.
