AlphaSmart - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The AlphaSmart is a keyboarding device that enables a person to work on the go, much like a laptop computer, but is strictly for word processing only, as it functions essentially like a simple digital typewriter.
The AlphaSmart took on the aesthetics of the computer it was intended to be partnered with; it had a boxy, durable beige plastic case like the Macintoshes of that era.
In January 2000, the AlphaSmart 3000 was released.

 Pen Computing Magazine: AlphaSmart Dana
AlphaSmart is billing it as a "notebook replacement." Sounds odd at first, especially for those who use their notebooks for so many power-hungry jobs, like storing and displaying photos, playing MP3 files, and even playing DVDs while on the road.
AlphaSmart has several years experience in this area because of their nine years making computers like the AlphaSmart 3000, a non-Palm OS typing computer for schools (reviewed in the last issue).
AlphaSmart has long sought to address the needs of all students, so there are many interface enhancements built in, with more in the works.

Karen has found the AlphaSmart to be a lifesaver with many students with disabilities she has worked with in the past and currently teaches.
Some of the unique features of the AlphaSmart that are beneficial to students with disabilities and their classroom settings and assignments are portability, expense, mode of operation, and organization.
The AlphaSmart can also be set up for four different keyboard layouts, two of which includes either right or left-handed typing which would be beneficial to students who may have better use of one hand over the other.

ATPM 8.12 - Review: AlphaSmart Dana
AlphaSmart’s latest revision, the Dana, looks similar but actually goes far beyond the capabilities of the 3000IR, serving as a sort of cross between it and a laptop computer.
AlphaSmart claims the Dana can be used for 25 hours on one charge, though using the backlight will naturally drain the battery faster.
I have used an AlphaSmart 3000 for 3 years and I must admit that, while I love some of the new features of the Dana, if I just want to write, I find the simplicity of the AlphaSmart 3000 cannot be beat, even by the Dana.

Cables are not included, but AlphaSmart will sell you a standard (and thankfully long...why does Apple think we all keep our keyboards within three feet of our Macs?) USB cable for $10, or a “Mac Y cable” for the same price, if you want to use ADB.
