 BETA-CAROTENE
Carotene occurs in several isomeric forms: alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, and zeta of which the form of beta acts as an antioxidant nutrient protecting the body from damaging molecules called free radicals and an immune system booster as it is converted to vitamin A (retinol), important in animal biology as the main dietary source.
Carotene: though carotene is the simplest of a group of natural pigments called carotenoids, it has an unsaturated and long aliphatic hydrocarbon chain.
Carotene is thought to transport light energy for photosynthesis or contribute to reduction reaction.

 Beta Carotene Benefits
Other members of the antioxidant carotene family include cryptoxanthin, alpha-carotene, zeaxanthin, lutein, and lycopene, but most of them do not convert to significant amounts of vitamin A. A good multivitamin is the foundation of health and nutrition.
Vitamin A is a major source of beta carotene and has also been shown to reduce the risk of cataracts.
Beta carotene is closely related to vitamin A, but there is a big difference.

The integrity of the beta carotene and its components such as alpha carotene and other carotenoids are kept intact.
However, they were not able to concentrate the beta carotene in a way that would maintain the natural balance of the beta carotene and the accompanying carotenoids.
Both groups were placed on a low beta carotene diet until their blood levels of beta carotene began to drop.

Studies reveal that consuming these carotenoids in combination is the safest and most beneficial way to obtain their healthful components.

 - Supplements
In 1994, the results from a large (almost 30,000 subjects) supplementation study (ATBC – the Alpha- Tocopherol and Beta- Carotene study) showed not only that beta-carotene supplements (20mg/day for 5-8 years) did NOT prevent lung cancer in high risk subjects (long-time male smokers), but actually caused an increase in lung cancer risk by almost 20%.
In 1996, another large study (CARET – the Beta- Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial) found virtually the same thing – with subjects receiving beta-carotene showing almost 50% more cases of lung cancer.
Unfortunately, intervention studies that have looked at purified beta-carotene supplements (not mixed carotenoids) have not cleared up any of the confusion.

Pooling Project of Prospective Studies of Diet and Cancer at Harvard School of Public Health
The Alpha-Tocopherol Beta-Carotene Prevention Study is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial that was designed to evaluate whether daily supplements of alpha-tocopherol and/or beta-carotene would reduce the risk of lung cancer and other types of cancer.
The study, initiated in 1992-1995, used a 2x2x2 factorial design to randomize participants to aspirin or aspirin placebo, vitamin E or vitamin E placebo, and beta-carotene or beta-carotene placebo (this component was terminated in January 1996).
Each study is a published cohort study which 1) used a comprehensive dietary assessment method to measure usual diet, 2) assessed the validity of their dietary assessment instrument or a closely related instrument, and 3) included a minimum number of cases of the specific cancer being examined.

Beta-carotene has received most of the attention because Beta-carotene generates vitamin A much more efficient than alpha-carotene.

 Carotenoid Complex
In contrast, when Daily Carotenoid Complex™ with its broad-spectrum of nutrients including alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and zeta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, cryptoxanthin, and other natural fruit and vegetable carotenoids was tested, it caused a much greater decrease in lipid oxidation than the beta-carotene alone.
For example, two carotenoids that have generated recent interest are lutein and its role in maintaining eye health, and alpha-carotene's role in cancer prevention.
Sometimes called "nature's crayons," carotenoids are a huge family of colorful plant pigments, many of which act as precursors of vitamin A. Carotenoids are responsible for the red in tomatoes, the orange in carrots, and the yellow in squash.

Carotenoids where some of the double bonds have been oxidized such as lutein and zeaxanthin, are known as xanthophylls; the un-oxidized carotenoids such as alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and lycopene are known as carotenes.
Probably the most well-known carotenoid is the one that gives this group its name, carotene, found in carrots and responsible for their bright orange colour.
Carotenoids are characterized by a large (35-40 carbon atoms) polyene chain, sometimes terminated by rings.
