  Alphons Diepenbrock Biography - Barnes & Noble.com
Alphons Diepenbrock was the leading Dutch composer of his era, an extraordinary achievement for a man whose formal training was in classical languages and Greek and Roman literature.
It was in the course of these activities that Diepenbrock began writing the choral works for which he became best known, including the "Missa in die festo." His two "Hymnen an die Nacht" received their first performances under Willem Mengelberg and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, which marked his breakthrough to mainstream acceptance in Holland.
Diepenbrock and Mahler also became friends and the two men conducted each other's works, Diepenbrock using his occasions as a guest conductor at the Concertgebouw to lead performances of Mahler's symphonies, as well as the works of Debussy.

This is a statement typical of Alphons Diepenbrock, then 50 years of age, who was unable to refrain from going over his completed works time and again and to keep 'improving' them.
Diepenbrock used the term 'tempo per vocali' to indicate that the rhythm of his vocal music was determined by the spoken language.
Diepenbrock was the creator of the ‘symphonic song’ (songs accompanied by orchestra) and wrote numerous songs with piano accompaniment.

And the name of Alphons Diepenbrock is up there too, born in Amsterdam in 1862, exactly 300 years after Sweelinck and just one year after Wagenaar.
If the evidence of these two discs does not quite make the case for Diepenbrock's place alongside the great and the good on the walls of the Concertgebouw, they are well worth hearing, and puts detail into another corner of the map of European music in the first decades of the 20th century.
Like the Swiss composer Otmar Schoeck, whose music Diepenbrock's resembles quite strongly, he was at his most convincing when allowed to be brooding and introverted.

At first, Diepenbrock took up a paternalistic attitude towards the attractive young woman, but later on other feelings started to play a part as well.
He was, however, worried by feelings of guilt towards his wife who for years looked with envy upon the relation and correspondence between the two, becoming more and more intimate.
Johanna was Diepenbrock's Muse (the composer secretly dedicated some works to her) who wanted to be his confidante, source of inspiration and finally his mistress.

The CD is filled out with music of another leading Dutch composer, Alphons Diepenbrock (1862-1921), his Marsyas Prelude and Entr'acte written as incidental music to a "mystical play" by Dutch author Balthazar Berhagen.
In the Prelude, Marsyas awakens to the spring with a flute solo, presumably that of Athene now found by Marysas, and in the Entr'acte wanderings through the forest are depicted.
One might have wished for longer playing time on the two single CDs, but the price is modest, the CD transfers first-rate—and you can't get them anywhere else.
