Alphonse, 1220–71, count of Poitiers and of Toulouse, brother of King Louis IX of France.
During the absence of Louis in the Holy Land, Alphonse was coregent (1250–52) with his mother, Blanche of Castile, and later (1252–54) with his younger brother, Charles of Anjou (later Charles I, king of Naples and Sicily).
Alphonse left no heir, and at his death his lands were incorporated into the holdings of Philip III, king of France.

Alphonse Allais (1855-1905) left his father's pharmacy in Honfleur for the fun of Paris.
Allais was also a brilliant logician and linguist, and used these skills in his stories, in which he played againt logic and denounced egoism, patriotism, clericalism and conformism, which were the main moral values of the bourgeoisie of the end of the XIXth centuries.
Some of his weird ideas found an application decades later; for instance, Allais proposed to solve social problems by moving the cities to the countryside and the countryside into the cities, which is now known as decentralization.

Lady Zephryne Allais du Crieux was born to Lord Alphonse Allais du Crieux (the brother of Duke Douard Allais du Crieux) and his only true love, and second wife, Eisen expatriate Eva du Crieux.
Lord Alphonse was devastated, and to escape the pain, began throwing himself deeper and deeper into the political scene.
Lord Alphonse had not planned to marry, nor as soon as he did, but at age 31, when he met Eva (a well-mannered, but spirited gentry), he wasted no time.

Art in America: 19th century AD
In the 1883 and 1884 Incoherent shows, artist Alphonse Allais expanded on Bilhaud's conceit by presenting a white and then a red monochrome painting.
By the time that Allais displayed his monochrome paintings the Incoherent exhibitions had grown, moving out of Levy's apartment to the Galerie Vivienne in 1883 and thereafter to other spaces in the quarter just south of Montmartre.
But while neither these exhibitions nor the nine Incoherents balls took place in Montmartre, the spirit of that neighborhood held sway, both through the personal connections of the participants and in the promotion-minded attitudes of Levy and his associates.

More than 20 years ago my old friend Miles Kington published his translations of some of the stories of the French humorist Alphonse Allais.
No doubt he would have been capable of doing so, but Allais was real enough, expert, according to the New Oxford Companion to French Literature, "in the logic of illogicality, in the practicality of the impractical".
Allais (1854-1905) belonged to the golden age of humorous journalism, when newspapers and magazines were always on the look-out for witty sketches and light, funny stories.

The most provocative work was the first documented monochrome painting by the poet Paul Bilhaud and entitled Negroes Fighting in a Cellar at Night.
Artist Alphonse Allais expanded on Bilhaud's conceit by exhibiting a white and then a red monochrome painting in the 1883 and 1884 Incohérent shows; in 1897 he published a book of these images along with an empty musical score billed as a funeral march for the deaf.
As early as 1885, with photographs of an ear filled with cotton and a hand holding a rose, filmmaker Emile Cohl prefigured the uncanny juxtapositions of Surrealists.
