  Alphonse Legros - LoveToKnow 1911
ALPHONSE LEGROS (1837-), painter and etcher, was born at Dijon on the 8th of May 1837.
Young Legros frequently visited the farms of his relatives, and the peasants and landscapes of that part of France are the subjects of many of his pictures and etchings.
Legros considered the traditional journey to Italy a very important part of artistic training, and in order that his students should have the benefit of such study he devoted a part of his salary to augment the income available for a travelling studentship.

Biography for: Alphonse Legros   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Legros settled in London in the summer of 1863 and the left hand male figure in Wapping (YMSM 35), was described by Rossetti: it was 'done from Alphonse Legros, though painted in from him just as he was in the first instance, is to be quite differently continued, to represent a sort of Spanish sailor'.
The reasons for their dispute are unclear but it has been suggested that Legros became jealous when JW assisted Fantin Latour in obtaining a commission to copy the works of old masters.
Legros' place in the 'Société de Trois' was taken by Albert Moore.

Alphonse Legros 1880 Etching, Rip van Winkle   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
During this period Legros had a taste for early Netherlandish art and for French Romanticism, which was later superseded by his admiration for Claude, Poussin and Michelangelo.
Legros occupied this position until 1893 and introduced etching and modelling to the syllabus, a reflection of his own interests.
He was a founder-member of the Society of Painter-Etchers in 1881 and of the Society of Medallists in 1885; the revival of the cast art medal was due almost entirely to his example.

 Alphonse Legros biographical information
Legros was born in Dijon where he attended the Ecole de Beaux Arts but was soon to move to Paris where he was at the spearhead of the etching revival in France.
He was very successful there and in 1875 was appointed head of the etching class at Royal College in South Kensignton and later as a professor at the Slade School.
Frank Bliss amassed a particularly good collection of Legros' own etchings, the catalogue of which forms an important reference work on the subject.

In that year they also published their first original etchings, a set of prints (Esquisses à l’eau-forte) by Alphonse Legros.
That year Cadart also hoped to encourage the production of original lithographs by distributing three stones each to Legros, Manet, Bracquemond, Théodule Ribot and Henri Fantin-Latour for them to work on.
Manet’s The Balloon (1862) was one of the results of the experiment, but the projected set was never published.
