The Alpine fire of January 1998 burnt part of the Alpine National Park and part of the Carey River State Forest.
National Parks are set aside for their unspoiled landscape, to provide for flora and fauna conservation, recreation and education.
Of the total 32,000 hectares burnt, 22,000 hectares was in National Park, of which 12,500 hectares is zoned Wilderness or Remote Natural Area.
