Italy’s troops comprise a significant portion of NRF 3, the prototype force that is participating in DG04, and as the host country, it has played a major role in the exercise by supplying ships, aircraft and large numbers of troops from its regular and elite forces.
The Alpini troops, aptly suited to secure a hillside staging point, were born in the early 1900s to defend Italy’s mountainous Alpine northern border during World War I. Many troops from the 3rd Alpini Regiment are currently stationed in Afghanistan and are responsible for securing the elections that are underway.
“When the Alpini were first born to defend the Alps against invading forces early in the last century, many died while defending their country,” said Lt. Gianluca Gardini, commander of the 3rd Alpini Regiment.
