The German Shepherd Dog is a medium-sized, well-balanced, muscular dog, slightly longer than tall, with a medium length coat, erect ears, and a low-set natural tail that normally reaches to the hock and is carried in a slight curve like a saber.
It was revised and at the WUSV conference on August 30, 1976, finalised, re-worded and catalogued with authorisation from the Executive and Board on March 23, 1991.
The German Shepherd Dog whose planned breeding was begun in the year 1899 following the founding of the Association, is based on breeding from Central and Southern German lines of the, then available, Watchdogs with the goal of producing a working dog, cut out for high performance.

 The African Dog
The African wild dog is a gregarious, pack-living animal with behaviour similar to that of the well known wolf of the northern hemisphere.
The wild dog has a similar role in nature to that of the wolf in that it removes weak and unhealthy animals from the prey population.
Wild dogs hunt as a pack - they quickly single out a weak or injured animal within a herd, and the animal is then pursued until it can run no further.

 Wolf-Dog
Since the wolf and the dog are the same species, is there really such an entity as a wolf "HYBRID", as it is generally acknowledged that all dogs and wolves are descended from an extinct animal in pre-historic times named 'Canis Lupus' (Dog Wolf).
Many (but not all!) of the dogs we have today resulted from the PRIMARY domestication of the Old World Southern Wolf, a smaller, less pack-oriented animal than the Northern Wolf, the wolf we are most familiar with today and which most of the 'recent' wolf crosses have used.
I say MANY dogs, but not all because many of the Northern breeds are the result of a SECONDARY domestication of the result of the primary with the Northern Wolves as 'recent' as 90 years ago (documented in the German Shepherd breed).

These dogs of almost a century ago were the basic structure on which the dogs we love and admire now were built, and the story of their development, and the faith and determination of those who devoted their energies to this task should be an inspiration to us forever.
The earliest report of an imported “ German Sheep Dog “ was in 1904 in Western Australia and it was not until 1920-25 that interest was aroused and further dogs were imported and the breed then known in England and consequently Australia as the “ Alsatian Wolf Dog or Wolfhound “ started to become popular.
The name was changed to “Alsatian Dog “in England around 1920 as the reference to wolf was as distasteful as was the word “ German “ at the end of the World War 1.
