 Asterales
Alseuosmiaceae may be recognised even vegetatively by their spiral, serrate leaves with axillary tufts of uniseriate hairs.
Platyspermation is strongly associated with other Alseuosmiaceae (Lundberg and Bremer 2001), and although its corolla is only shortly tubular, the lobes being rather spreading (buzz pollination?), in other respects it agrees well with the rest of the family.
Genera of Alseuosmiaceae have previously been placed in Caprifoliaceae, Rubiaceae, Rutaceae, Ericaceae, Epacridaceae, etc.; the family is included in Hydrangeales by Takhtajan (1997).

The reduction or absence of the disc and the non-opening of the corolla are not considered to be within the normal range of variation of this species; there is a link between these anomalies and the presence of parasitic insects.

Theses from Uppsala University : 2696 - Evolutionary Studies in Asterids Emphasising Euasterids II
The genera of Icacinaceae in the traditional sense not placed in any of the above families (all euasterids II) are members of early diverging lineages of the euasterids I and possibly included in the order Garryales.
The three woody Australasian families Alseuosmiaceae, Argophyllaceae, and Phellinaceae are confirmed as members of Asterales, despite traditional placements not close to that order.

Merrett et al.—Ecology and conservation of Alseuosmia quercifolia
Ecology and conservation of Alseuosmia quercifolia (Alseuosmiaceae) in the Waikato region, New Zealand
Abstract The ecology of Alseuosmia quercifolia, a small endemic shrub, was investigated, focussing on its habitat requirements, population dynamics, phenology and reproductive biology, and conservation status.
We suggest it fulfils the requirements of the category "declining", using the most recent classification of threatened and uncommon plants of New Zealand.

Hi seminal paper in 1975 in the Bases of Angiosperm Phylogeny volume on the contributions of vegetative anatomy to understanding angiosperm phylogeny still is pertinent to current morphological based phylogenetic analyses.
During his 30 year career, Bill collected, studied and provided basic documentation of wood, floral, leaf or pollen morphology/anatomy on, for example, Connaraceae, Cunoniaceae, Actinidiaceae, Clethraceae, Styracaceae, Aristolochiaceae, and smaller, less well-known families of tropical plants, such as the Bonnetiaceae, Physenaceae, Medusagynaceae, Caryocaraceae, Alseuosmiaceae, and Strasburgeriaceae.
This information was used to address questions of relationships and, frequently, ecological adaptations.

The inclusion in the order of Alseuosmiaceae, Argophyllaceae, Carpodetaceae, Phellinaceae and Rousseaceae is the result mainly of new advances in molecular systematics.
