Petermanniaceae + Alstroemeriaceae + Luzuriagaceae + Colchicaceae + Melanthiaceae + Philesiaceae + Smilacaceae + Rhipogonaceae + Liliaceae: rhizome +; (fruit a berry).
Alstroemeriaceae may be recognised by their spiral, leaves that are twisted at the base and so are more or less "upside-down" and have quite broad blades, their large, monosymmetric flowers which are held with the median member of the outer whorl adaxial, and their inferior ovary.
Stem group Alstroemeriaceae are dated to ca 76 mybp, crown group Alstroemeriaceae to ca 30 mybp (Janssen and Bremer 2004).

Genetic divergence among natural populations of Alstroemeria aurea D. Don: A dominant clonal herb of the understory in ...
The ability of a plant species to occupy different environments could be the result of genetic adaptation, environmentally induced phenotypic plasticity, or a combination of these two processes (Jain, 1976).
The objective of the present study was to analyze the degree of among-population genetic divergence in Alstroemeria aurea, a clonal species with restricted pollen movement and seed dispersal that inhabits different habitat types in northwestern Patagonia.
Alstroemeria aurea, D. Don (Alstroemeriaceae) is a perennial herb that is geographically distributed in Argentina and Chile from 36° to 44° S latitude (Sanso, 1996).

With the aim of clarifying their systematic position and generic circumscription, morphological and anatomical studies were carried out on 18 species of Alstroemeria and 11 species of Bomarea.
Light microscopy (LM) and scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy were used to study the morphology of mature seeds and pollen.
Morphology of subterranean organs, pollen exine, adaptive dehiscence of capsules, seed dispersal, seed coat and karyotype characteristics (such as basic chromosome number and symmetry) support the view that these genera are related but should have independent generic status.

 Liliales
Some have a southern distribution, such as the South African Colchicaceae and South American Alstroemeriaceae, while the Liliaceae is primarily a northern group.
It has also been suggested that the Alstroemeriaceae may actually belong in the Orchidales, but this has not been well studied.
Because the taxonomy of this group has been in such turmoil, it is difficult to interpret the fossil record.
