If your keymap is configured with an AltGr key, you can also press Ctrl+Alt simulatenously to get the same effect.
This would normally require both hands, unless you want to stretch your left hand all over the keyboard (not good for fast typing), so instead you can do (left)ctrl+alt+2, which is pretty easy to do with one hand.
This key is used in a fashion similar to the shift key.

And it popped into my head as I prepared to talk about the AltGR key, which is a key that does not exist on the keyboard upon which I am typing right now.
Thats fine as far as it goes, but only the first two words of his post suggest what AltGR stands for, and the words do not really explain what it means, though he talks a bit about what it does.
The original intended purpose of it was to have an easy way to get at the table-based graphical characters that were so handy to use in a console application, located on the right side of the spacebar.

AltGr + hyphen produces the "soft hyphen": an invisible character that marks a point where a word may be broken and a hyphen added when laying out text.
AltGr + space is the "non-breaking space", a space character where the line is not allowed to split.
AltGr + comma adds a cedilla to c and C (ç Ç), a ring above to a and A (å Å), a slash to o and O (ø Ø), and turns 2, 3, and 4 into ½, ¾, and ¼ respectively.

Problems with AltGr on international keyboard layouts
Even pressing AltGr by itself generates garbage, which it shouldn't, since it's supposed to be a silent key.
Please don't interpret this as some sort of criticism of Speakup or it's inclusion in the Linux kernel; I fully understand the need for it, and am in fact currentlying taking an entry-level university course in deploying assistive technologies, so as to learn more about what solutions are needed.
But there has to be a way of enabling Speakup use without rendering the AltGr key, and hence the keyboard layouts used in large parts of the world, unusable at the same time.
