Baja Verapaz, the more southerly of these two departments, is sparsely populated, a mixture of deep river valleys, dry hills and lush tropical forest, dotted with tiny hamlets.
Local people say it rains for thirteen months a year here, alternating between straightforward downpour and drizzle of the chipi-chipi, a misty rain that hangs interminably on hills, although the mountains are now being deforested at such a rate that weather patterns may soon be disrupted.
The capital of Alta Verapaz is Cobán, from where roads head north into Petén, west to el Quiché;, and east to Lake Izabal.

 The killing of returned refugees: - the Xamán massacre (1997)
The families of Santiago and Maurilia settled on the Xamán farm, Chisec, in the department of Alta Verapaz, as part of a group of 206 families of Q'eqchi, Q'anjobal, Ixil, Mam and K'iché origin.
Despite the transfer of the Xamán judicial proceedings from a military to a civilian court, over a year and a half after the massacre no-one has yet been brought to justice for the killing of the 11 returnees and the injuring of 30 others, nor have the victims or their relatives received any compensation.
Four days after the massacre, the Minister of Defence resigned and the Commander of Military Zone 21, Cobán, Alta Verapaz, responsible for the military patrol was dismissed by President Ramiro de León Carpio.

The canned turkey will be used during the noon meal during the next two years, helping to tide the school over until it can produce most of its own food.
The canned turkey is "supporting in a very tangible way the education of the K'ekchi' Mennonite youth in Alta Verapaz," said Rob Cahill, an MCC worker at the school.

Founded in 1994 by a group of Guatemalans, BIDAS was established in the department of Alta Verapaz, in the municipality of Cobán.
The project carried out an inventory of the regional cloud forests and the monitoring of the distribution of the quetzal in the mountains of Caquipec, Guaxac y Yalijux in the department of Alta Verapaz, where the largest density of these rare and beautiful birds is found, roughly 145 birds per square kilometer.
We employ various components such as sustainable agriculture, bio-monitoring of bird species, and handicraft and ecotourism (low-impact tourism) projects as alternatives to protect the sub-tropical rain and cloud forests of Alta Verapaz and improve the quality of life for the rural poor inhabants of this region.
