Altamont is located in the Altamont hills east of Livermore, on what is now Altamont Pass Road, but was Highway 50.
Altamont was established in 1868 when the SP railroad line was put in.
Altamont had a railroad turntable to turn around helper steam engines, which were used to get the trains up the hill from Livermore.

A Caltrain spur could be constructed over a rebuilt rail trestle alongside the Dumbarton Bridge to connect to BART and the Altamont Commuter Express (the Stockton-San Jose commuter line) in the East Bay.
BART might build a diesel multiple unit (think of it as "light" commuter rail) line from its terminus in the east end of Contra Costa County to the new suburbs on the Central Valley's western edge, although its first phase would extend only as far as Antioch.

On October 19, 1998, a new era dawned in passenger rail service with the inaugural run of the Altamont Commuter Express — or ACE — between Stockton and San Jose.
The route traverses 85 miles and is highlighted by a spectacular ride through the Altamont Pass, which three decades ago was the territory of Western Pacific's California Zephyr.
The train had a fair number of passengers, but it was not overcrowded as some had feared.

The Altamont Commuter Express (also known as ACE, pronounced "ace") is a commuter train service in California connecting Stockton with San Jose.
The service was started on October 19, 1998 with two trains daily in each direction, later increased to three trains in each direction, and as of August 2006 runs four trains daily in each direction, including a "midday" train each direction.
It then parallels Altamont Pass Rd. The path of the original 1869 Sacramento-to-San Francisco Bay extension of the First Transcontinental Railroad can be seen on the right for a several miles.

Metrolink generated over $60 million in operating revenues in 1999 and is the largest commuter rail service in the state, operating on 416 route miles with the most number of rail stations - 47 - and carries the highest average daily ridership - over 31,000 passengers.
Transit revenues are generally calculated for both bus and rail, but previously Metrolink and Altamont Commuter Express revenues were not a part of the STA formula, even though commuter rail systems in San Diego and the Bay Area were already eligible.
Last year, the state program total was $50 million, which was allocated to eligible operators across the state, including commuter rail systems.
