Selenge aimag is located in the North part of Mongolia in a beautiful basin of Orkhon and Selenge rivers.
Selenge is the first - or last - aimag seen by train travelers shuttling between Ulaanbaatar and Russia.
Near the junction of the Selenge and Orkhon rivers, the capital of Selenge aimag, Sukhbaatar, was founded in the 1940s.

During the 14-18 centuries, the international trade was practised in Khiagt, Khuder and Zelter areas and Selenge was the door for the world capital to enter Mongolia.

The two sides gave more significance to issues pertaining to the establishment of a Free Economic Zone in Altanbulag soum of Selenge Aimag and the coal extraction from the Ulaan Ovoo deposit.
According to a provisional calculation, a total of 3,5 million USD is needed to implement the coal extraction project.
The Buryat Republic will help Selenge Aimag to establish a secondary school with Russian language teaching and ten students from the Aimag will study in the Buryat Republic s higher schools.

The road from Altanbulag (on the far side of the border from Kyakhta) to Ulaan Baatar is smooth asphalt with little traffic and gorgeous steppe scenery.

 WHO | 1996 - Cholera in Mongolia - Update 2
A report from the Ministry of Health dated 19 August informs of 106 cases and 8 deaths in the current outbreak of cholera first reported on 9 August.
Most cases (84 cases, 5 deaths) were reported in Khutul District of Selenge Province.
Cases were now also reported Darhan-Uul and Altanbulag in the same province, in the capital Ulan Batar, Central Province, in Zaamar District, Tuv Province and in Ulaantolgoi District in Orkhon Province.

In an effort to promote tourism, the Government of Mongolia has advised us that foreigners may now enter Mongolia by automobile or motorcycle at four additional land border crossings.
The affected border crossings include: Tsagaan Nuur in Bayan Ulgii province, Altanbulag in Selenge province, Ereen Tsav in Dornod province and Zamiin Uud in Dornogobi province.
These permanent highway checkpoints are open five days a week, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m.
