The Book of Concord -- What is a Lutheran?
Philip Melanchthon wrote the Augsburg Confession and it was read before the imperial court on June 30, 1530.
The largest document in the Book of Concord, its longest chapter, is devoted to the most important truth of the Christian faith: the doctrine of justification by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
Philip Melanchthon was asked to expand on the subject of the Roman pope and did so in his treatise, which also was included in the Book of Concord.

The aim of the author has been to make the book answer such questions as might reasonably be put to it by an intelligent reader, who will of course have regard to the limitations imposed by its size; and also to present a picture of the phases through which the country has passed.
During the third quarter of the sixteenth century Philip II of Spain was engaged in a bitter, bloody struggle with his subjects in the Netherlands.
Philip, loathing heresy, set himself to 'exterminate the root and ground of this pest,' and his ruthless Spanish soldiery carried out their master's injunctions with such pitiless ferocity that their effort to crush the revolt stands as one of the most awful phases of modern history.

Probably the best-known book by the quintessential hippie-poet of the 1960s, a key figure in the Cleveland, Ohio underground and a writer whose suicide at a young age ensured him a kind of literary immortality that probably would have surprised him.
Books inscribed by Lowry are scarce, and an inscription such as this -- to another literary figure, and making poetic reference to the volcano of the title -- makes this one of the best association copies of this book one could hope for.
A very nice copy of his greatest book, seldom found signed or inscribed, and as fine a literary association as one could hope for with this book.

At the same meeting that considered Luther’s articles, Philip Melanchthon was asked to expand on the subject of the Roman papacy and did so in his treatise, which was also later included in the Book of Concord.
Philip Melanchthon, a layman, was a professor of Greek and theology at the University of Wittenberg.
The Book of Concord is unique among all churches in the world, since it gathers together the Lutheran Church’s most normative expressions of the Christian faith into a single book that has been used for nearly five hundred years as a fixed point of reference for the Lutheran Church.

Because of the functional connection between the incense altar and the ark, the book of Kings regarded the incense altar as belonging to the inner sanctuary (1 Ki 6:22) even though it was located in the outer apartment.
The book of Hebrews refers to the same idea: "Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant..." (Heb 9:3-4; RSV).
The expression "having the golden altar..." means that this altar belonged to the most holy place in terms of function, as in the book of Kings.

The book of Revelation is one of the most neglected and yet one of the most abused books of the New Testament today and in times past.
I do not believe that the book of Revelation is any less important in content than any of the other inspired books of the Bible, yet it is one of two books that most Christians shy away from because of its pre-judged content.
Certainly as we have noted in the purpose and theme of the Book of Revelation the message one must see is that of the present Glory of Christ and the power He has to give victory unto those who endure the sufferings of this present life for the cause of Jesus Christ.

This book, a bestseller that is the motherlode for Brown’s sort of theorizing, is not entirely endorsed by Brown’s historian character, who pins it for “dubious leaps of faith” but allows that its “fundamental premise [is] sound.” It’s nice to know something is, because the authors’ qualifications are not.

For there, that is, in the Book of Samuel, he says, "And if he commit iniquity I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men; but my mercy will I not take away from him," meaning by stripes the strokes of correction.
