 Kerlogue Altar Stone
In 1956 Rev. Michael O’Neill, Adm., had the Altar moved to its present resting place in front of the Mission Cross, where it was in years past, used as the Altar of Repose from which Benediction was given during the annual procession of the Blessed Sacrament.
At each transfer of the Altar the stones composing the base were carefully numbered, and it stands today exactly as it stood in the old Monastery of Kerlogue.
On the return of better times the Altar at Kerlogue was again abandoned almost forgotten, until in 1887 Father Luke Doyle, Adm., of Bride Street had the Altar taken down and re-erected in the grounds of the Church of the Assumption.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Chapel
In the Roman Rite the term "chapel of repose" is applied to the altar or chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is solemnly reserved between the Mass of Maundy Thursday and the Mass of the Presanctified on Good Friday.
But when the members of the priesthood, instead of concelebrating with the bishop in the basilica, began each to say his own Mass, a plurality of altars became a necessity if the ancient rule of "one Mass at one altar" was to be kept.
The Gallican Rite required this latter restriction; thus, in a synod of Auxerre, it is decreed that two Masses must not be said at one altar on the same day, and, moreover, that no presbyter may celebrate at an altar which had that day been used by the bishop.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Holy Week
This is borne in solemn procession to an "altar of repose" adorned with flowers and lighted with a profusion of candles, the hymn "Pange lingua gloriosi corporis mysterium" being sung upon the way.
So far as regards the fact of the consecration of an additional Host to be reserved for the Mass of the Presanctified, this practice is very ancient, but the elaborate observances which now surround the altar of repose are of comparatively recent date.
In the modern celebration of Maundy Thursday attention centres upon the reservation of a second Host, which is consecrated at the Mass, to be consumed in the service of the Presanctified next day.

Today the displays surrounding the altar of repose are apt to be less elaborate than those of previous generations.
In the absence of the bells the beginning and ending of religious services and devotions were announced by the sounding of a wooden clapperboard, an ancient device used in churches before the introduction of bells in the fifth century.
Indeed, Maundy Thursday was viewed as the last day of Lent rather than the first day of the Triduum throughout the Middle Ages.

WebMuseum: Bellini, Giovanni: Madonna with saints
When one enters the little church of San Zaccaria in Venice and stands before the picture which the great Venetian painter Giovanni Bellini (1431?-1516) painted over the altar there in 1505 - in his old age - one immediately notices that his approach to color was very different.
In the Byzantine tradition, the picture of the Virgin used to be rigidly flanked by images of the saints, Bellini knew how to bring life into this simple symmetrical arrangement without upsetting its order.
He also knew how to turn the traditional figures of the Virgin and saints into real and living beings without divesting them of their holy character and dignity.
