While the art of 'Altars Of Madness' was professional but still had an endearing, amateur quality, 'Blessed Are The Sick' was much darker and, in a way, more serious.
Where 'Altars Of Madness' was a celebration of the metaphysical power granted by Satan, this album is quite worldly, celebrating sin not for it's strike against god, but for pleasure in and of itself.
While Satan is the protagonist of 'Altars', crafting Morbid Angel into willing tools of his bidding, the band seizes control of its own destiny in 'Blessed', only worshipping a pantheon of H.P. Lovecraft's mythical demiurges for their own motives, not for an actual reverence of those powers greater than them.

After their monumental "Altars of Madness" which used this technique to create ambient melody and rhythm, Morbid Angel used it for prog-rock precision in the details of their epic "Blessed Are the Sick."
"Altars of Madness" evolved this technique into fast-picking and ambient relationship to beat, accentuating it with atonal lead guitars.

Expecting Morbid Angel to release another Altars of Madness or Covenant is like anticipating the next Metallica album to sound like Master of Puppets or the upcoming Slayer platter to possess the unbridled intensity of Reign in Blood.
Altars of Madness is the sensory equivalent of the self mutilation that adorns guitarist and founder Trey Azagthoth’s arm on his photo inside the album’s sleeve.
Carving pentagrams into his forearm with a razor sharp blade wasn’t one of the healthiest means to channel the chaotic swirl of life’s emotional turbulence, yet it was an effort at catharsis nonetheless.

Death’s 1988 album ‘Leprosy’ was the first to start refining this formula past its most basic, but ‘Altars Of Madness’ took it a step further.
Although nowhere near as heavy as much of the Death Metal coming out today, ‘Altars Of Madness’ proved a valuable point at the time of its release, that brutality and skill need not be mutually exclusive.

Some people insist that "Altars of Madness" was Azagthoth and Co.’s best album and they have never equaled it.
"Altars of Madness" had redefined death metal, mashing death, thrash and speed all together in a vicious and original sound.
The production on the CD is better than on "Altars", it has a looser, dirtier sound with more bottom end.

Possibly the most influential and definitive metal album ever, Morbid Angel's 1989 debut Altars of Madness marked the advent of both death and fl metal in their most modern incarnations.
This, coupled with the impossible speed and stealth of drummer Pete Sandoval, undoubtedly made a great impression on the minds of those Northern Europeans who were destined to become pillars of the infamous fl metal scene of the early 90's.
Showcasing outstanding musicianship and a frightening sincerity in the message it conveys, Altars of Madness is an unrivaled classic that absolutely must be heard by anyone with even a passing interest in the evolution of extreme music.

Seriously what ever happened to the band that made such death metal classics like ‘Altars of Madness’ or ‘Covenant?’ Apparently at some point in time they decided to stop being imaginative and decided the best path to choose was a path of mediocrity.

In the vein of genre crossing bands in the field of thrash and early death metal came one of the most monumental debuts from a band who is still making waves today.

There are several reasons why Altars of Madness still gets so much airtime on my speakers today, much more than the quote on quote “best metal albums ever period” such as Reign In Blood or Master of Puppets.
