Altera actually moved to 300mm wafers at 130nm, so the gains here are strictly from the new process and geometry.
Altera claims that Stratix II offers 50 percent higher performance, double the logic density, and 40% lower cost than their highly successful Stratix family.
Altera’s ALM approach appears to help in all these areas, allowing the benefits of the new process node to come through without so many of the usual drawbacks.

Altera said it still expects sales between $288.4 million and $294 million, for a sequential growth rate of 1% to 3%, for the current quarter, which ends in September.
Altera also reduced capital spending plans to $48 million from a targeted $52 million, because of fewer wafer purchases and equipment buys.

On Thursday, Ware concluded that Altera did not infringe one of the patents, the so-called "Freeman patent." He denied Altera's request for a finding that the other patent -- known as the "Carter patent" -- is non-infringing.

Altera (ALTR:Nasdaq - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) has received a request from the Securities and Exchange Commission asking the company to voluntarily provide information relating to its communications with equity analysts and their firms.
According to a Dow Jones report earlier Thursday, the request comes after a public apology that Altera issued in July to a former Wells Fargo analyst who had alleged that he was denied access to conference calls and other communication as punishment for negativity on the company's stock.
"As previously stated, Altera's policy is to grant access to all analysts who cover the company," the company said in the statement.
