An altered state of consciousness is a state of consciousness that differs significantly from baseline or normal consciousness often identified with a brain state that differs significantly from the brain state at baseline or normal consciousness.
The baseline brain state might be best defined by the presence of two important subjective characteristics: the psychological sense of a self at the center of one’s perception and a sense that this self is identified with one’s body.

Charisma, Crowd Psychology and Altered States of Consciousness
To recapitulate, we have then in Weber two forms of altered or dissociated states of consciousness that, from his point of view, are not amenable to sociological analysis since they stand outside rational goal-orientation, yet are nonetheless of crucial importance in history and culture.
But it is also clear that the denial of collective deindividuating altered states of consciousness corresponds with our present social formation, which mirrors and ratifies the rationalization processes of the society at large and finds its most powerful philosophical expression in the romantic existentialist apotheosis of the self 28.
The stated end is to permit the convert to escape from obligations of should and ought (referred to as 'garbage') in order to find the authentic, eternal and vital selves that lie beneath social and familial conditioning.

For some years I have been investigating altered states of consciousness, and a major result of this has been to raise some questions about our ordinary or so-called "normal" state of consciousness (SoC) that are not usually asked.
Our ordinary state of consciousness is not something "natural" or given, as we tend to assume, but a highly complex construction, a specialized tool for coping with our environment and the people in it, a reflection of the consensus reality of the society we live in.
The terms "state of consciousness" and "altered state of consciousness" have come to be used so loosely that they often mean very little, other than what's on a person's mind at the moment.

Mavromatis (1987) notes that the word 'hypnagogic' (from the Greek hypnos = sleep, and agnogeus = conductor, leader) was first used by the Frenchman Maury (1848) to specifically denote the deeply relaxed state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep during which flashes of inspiration and creative insight often appear.
On the average, only 5 to 10 minutes is spent in hypnagogia as one passes from a relaxed alpha brainwave state on into the first stages of sleep.
During this fleeting psycho-physical state, people typically report randomly occurring visual and auditory experiences which, in comparison to the dreams characteristic of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, are more disconnected and short-lived.

These altered states are thought to give a person a sense of freedom and feelings of ecstatic joy, love and peace, over the fact that one has finally discovered his oneness with the Universe and with every other living thing as a part of God.
This of course, is due to the fact that the altered state of consciousness is merely the induction of a trance-like state of mind, which quickly wears off, and it gives no long-lasting sense of peace and joy that only comes from repentance towards God and the doing of His will.
During these states of altered consciousness, one communes with the souls of past, present and future beings, and thus, all sense of 'now', all sense of time, is temporarily lost.
