		An alternate timeline is a tangential space-time continuum, typically created upon the alteration of one or more events in the 'past'.
		Alternate timelines are frequently the result of unintentional temporal interference.
		Such timelines usually involve a cyclic aspect (action in the original timeline altering the past/future, creating an alternate timeline, an object/person unaffected by the temporal change travelling to/already present in the past/future to ensure the original timeline is re-established).

		Some storylines like Shadowrun, generally assume that up until some dfined point in the future, history is pretty much as it is in the real world.
		In general, I like alternate histories rather than alternate futures as alternate futures (unless they are written by really good writers) just just off in lala land somewhere.
		I'm more into fantasy than sci-fi so i guess it would have to be the past: I would love to see a pulpy alternate 30's with open magic and fantastic races mingling with zepplins, the silver screen and fedora wearing gangsters.

		In Back to the Future 2, in the alternate 1985 Doc and Marty couldn't go back to the future and stop old Biff from taking the almanac cause it would be the future of the alternate 1985.
		Maybe it's because he is a billionaire in 1985 but Marty manages to beat him, so 2015 is not the alternate future but the right one (Marty is married, has children and he gets fired and stuff...).
		Thus, at the moment that Old Biff hits the "time travel" button on the machine, the past is changed and thus the present (at this time according to the viewer, 2015) is changed.

		I believe the alternate reality or universe that we should investigate first and foremost is the German empire worldline, in that there is by far more "evidence/testimony" about this one than any other that I know of [again, save perhaps for the Endtime timeline].
