Alternate hypothesis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The alternate hypothesis, or alternative hypothesis, together with the null hypothesis are the two rival hypotheses whose likelihoods are compared by a statistical hypothesis test.
Usually the alternate hypothesis is the possibility that an observed effect is genuine and the null hypothesis is the rival possibility that it has resulted from random chance.
Incorrectly rejecting the null hypothesis is a Type I error; incorrectly failing to reject it is a Type II error.

The null hypothesis is that the incoming aircraft is not hostile.
The alternate hypothesis is that the incoming aircraft is hostile.
If the alternate hypothesis is false and actually the incoming aircraft is a commercial airliner carrying hundreds of civilian passengers, the consequence of committing a Type I error is killing hundreds of innocent people and even starting a war that may eventually cause more deaths.

If we find that the data suggest the null hypothesis cannot be rejected, and no difference is present in the maximum wall thickness, we must conclude that the alternate hypothesis and our hypothesis of interest are probably false.
The rules of hypothesis testing state that it is important to specify the probability at which you, the researcher, will reject the null hypothesis of no difference.
We may reject the null hypothesis when it is indeed true (thereby making a Type I or alpha [a] error), or we may accept the null hypothesis when it is indeed false (a Type II or beta [b] error).

 Statistical Hypothesis Testing
Hypothesis testing often confuses people but it is the keystone of most statistical applications.
The alternate hypothesis is that the process change or treatment has an effect, or something is wrong with the process.

Hypothesis testing is the process of determining whether a confidence interval includes a previously known population mean value.

For the purpose of statistical testing of a hypothesis it is normal to formulate a pair of hypotheses: the null hypothesis (Ho) and the alternate hypothesis (Ha).
The alternate hypothesis, it’s opposite counterpart, is usually the idea that we would like to prove (but can’t because proof is impossible).
The degrees of freedom for a hypothesis test are used to determine the shape of the theoretical distribution, since many distributions (like normal, binomial, Poisson and others) can take on different shapes as their parameters change.

 Hypothesis Testing
Hypothesis testing refers to the process of using statistical analysis to determine if the observed differences between two or more samples are due to random chance (as stated in the null hypothesis) or to true differences in the samples (as stated in the alternate hypothesis).
The alternate hypothesis (Ha) is a statement that the observed difference or relationship between two populations is real and not the result of chance or an error in sampling.
Hypothesis testing is the process of using a variety of statistical tools to analyze data and, ultimately, to fail to reject or reject the null hypothesis.

If the hypothesis is not rejected, 20% of the defects will actually be traced to the CPU socket but if enough evidence is statistically provided that the null hypothesis is untrue, an alternate hypothesis should be assumed to be true.

 The Alternate Hypothesis
One of the strange things about statistical hypothesis testing is that we have no viable means of “proving” that the so-called alternate hypothesis is true.
Typically this is the hypothesis we hope to confirm because our main interest is to discover relationships and connections that explain the way the world works.
Upon rejecting the Null hypothesis, we conclude that there are solid statistical grounds for accepting the Alternative as a sound version of reality—at least in the sample under test.
