They were part of the first major game of this type, the webgame created for the movie "AI: Artificial Intelligence." That game ran for several months and built up an interesting story that complimented what happened in the movie.
The game twisted to react to the actions of its players, and in some cases players inspired storylines that the game masters (or "Puppet Masters"/PM's) incorporated into the plot.

I'm more interested in the alternate reality aspect of this genre than anything else and I wanted to build a model that enforced that.
The characters acted on their motivations and in many ways the gaming aspect was secondary.
I'm quite happy with the way that concept worked but realize that some players are frustrated that they didn't get to play that kind of role.
