Alternative Investment Market - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Alternative Investments Market (AIM) is a sub-market of the London Stock Exchange, allowing smaller companies to float shares with a more flexible regulatory system than is applicable to the Main Market.
AIM was launched in 1995 and has raised almost £24bn for more than 2,200 companies.
AIM has also started to become an international exchange, often due to its low-regulatory burden, especially in relation to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (which imposes regulatory costs on companies listed in the US, including those without any operations).

 About Man - Group Overview
In recent years, a growing community of private and institutional investors have looked to alternative investments as a means to obtain diversification away from traditional investments and improve the risk-adjusted return profile of their portfolios.
Pursuit of absolute returns: The hallmark of alternative investments is the pursuit of absolute returns – that is, the quest to generate positive returns and defend gains in both falling and rising markets.
Unlike traditional investment approaches, which depend mainly on asset appreciation for their performance, the primary driver of performance in alternative investments is the skill, expertise and actions of managers.

Aiming for AIM - A buoyant equity market
Given the success of the market to date in 2004, it is understandable that senior management in a number of companies are considering a listing on AIM as a realistic strategic option.
There is a buoyancy on the AIM market not seen since the highs experienced in 2000.  Current activity levels are likely to be maintained throughout 2004.  Management of emerging businesses should seriously consider whether a listing on AIM is appropriate to their business.  There is a window of opportunity which is too good to overlook.

AIM (Alternative Investment Market) is the London Stock Exchange's global market for smaller, growing companies.
Importantly, all AIM companies are required to have a nominated adviser (popularly known as a "nomad") from the register of such advisers published by the Exchange.
Ordinarily, once a company has been on AIM for 2 years it will have the opportunity to seek admittance to the main market by using a special expedited procedure.

Alternative Investment Market still growing 10 years on
AIM’s lighter regulatory touch, lower fees and greater flexibility to raise funds have continued to attract a variety of companies despite a tough market for new issues in Europe, taking the market’s total number of firms to 1,200 and seeing their total value rise 73 percent in 2004.
AIM’s chief, Martin Graham, said the level of corporate governance and disclosure for AIM-listed firms was high, adding that the failure rate for companies since the market’s inception in 1995 ran at just 3 percent.
Last year, AIM opted out of plans to be regulated by the European Union and continues to regulate itself under the oversight of Britain’s Financial Services Authority, and it retains a structure whereby nominated advisers continue to vet their companies’ disclosure.

AIM at 10 - Alternative investment? - Money extra
Companies on the Alternative Investment Market do not need a three year trading history as is the case when joining the main market and the market's size with so few companies listed, was creating bewilderment.
AIM has since come of age and matured with grace but nevertheless there are still potential concerns in the pipeline.
Yet AIM is likely to continue to grow despite these concerns and it seems that the added volatility of the market compared with its larger brothers only serves to excite and intrigue the investor more.

AIM companies are not bound by the full Listing Rules of the UK Listing Authority and have their own set of rules, the AIM Rules.
As with all markets, a company admitted to AIM must ensure that lines of communication exist between itself and the market to ensure that the market is fully aware of all information and developments that could affect the financial prospects of the company.

Heather Connon in the Alternative Investment Market
When the Alternative Investment Market was launched, it was dismissed as a high-risk venture and only a handful of institutions were prepared to invest in it.
It is also launching two new indices, the Aim UK 50 of the 50 largest British constituents, and the Aim 100 index, which will include overseas businesses, which it hopes will boost liquidity on the market by encouraging firms to market new products based on the indices.
Aim's predecessors, such as the Unlisted Securities Market and the so-called Rule 42 trading system, eventually failed - indeed, Aim was established only grudgingly by the LSE after companies on the USM complained they would be unable to find a market for their shares.

The good news is that there is cause for celebration: 70 new issues have appeared on Aim so far this year alone, and by the end of the year it is expected to be representing 900 smaller firms.
Then there’s the market’s performance: during the bubble, Aim outperformed the FTSE by five times and in the last 12 months it has recovered at twice the rate of the FTSE (although the last few weeks have been rockier).
Aim may have outperformed recently, but let’s not forget that it fell 80% after the collapse of the stockmarket bubble, and that most small-cap indices are weighted heavily towards tech firms, which explains their outperformance over the last few years.
