 Independent Media Centers: Cyber-Subversion and the Alternative Press
Throughout American history a number of communities have established alternative news outlets, including African-American organizations, suffragette and feminist groups, immigrants, war resisters and various organizations on the left end of the political landscape [11].
While other online alternative news sources often fill their Web pages with editorials, commentaries, and news analysis (and Indymedia often links to these and other sources), Indymedia's primary emphasis is in providing a Web outlet for filing original, first-hand coverage online through print, photos, audio, and video.
Indymedia issued press passes to journalists who then went out to the protests and recorded what they saw with pens, paper, audio and video tape, and digital cameras.

 Some newspapers skipping 'Doonesbury' strip for language this week
About a dozen newspapers have complained, and some told Universal Press Syndicate that they wouldn't run the comic or were printing an edited version.
But, the syndicator didn't offer alternative strips to use, as it's done in the past when there's controversial content.
Universal Press says the complaints aren't a surprise.

 20 Papers Have Problem with Saturday's 'Doonesbury'
Editors told Universal Press Syndicate, the comic strip's distributor, that if their reporters aren't allowed to use profanity in stories, they don't think "Doonesbury" should, either.
Salem said no changes -- such as offering an alternative strip for the day -- have been planned as a result of complaints from the newspapers, which are scattered across the country.
A spokesman for Kansas City-based Universal Press Syndicate, which distributes "Doonesbury," said at least 20 newspapers have contacted the company to complain about the cartoon for Saturday editions.
