Althaea is the dried, peeled root of Althaea officinalis, Linn.
Althaea has been applied to inflamed tissues as a fomentation (1 part of powdered root to 5 parts of water), the macerated drug being used as a poultice; and has been recommended as an ointment in a variety of skin diseases.
Prepared by boiling 2 of althaea leaves with 40 of water, evaporating to a thin extract, and incorporating with 4 of lard.

Althaea officinalis is an herbaceous perennial, with a perpendicular branching root and erect woolly stems, from two to four feet or more in height, branched and leafy towards the summit.
It is found in various other plants besides the marshmallow, as in the shoots of asparagus, in vetches grown in the dark, in all the varieties of the potato, and in the roots of the comfrey and licorice plant.
ALTHAEA or MARSHMALLOW LEAVES, under the title of Folia Althaea, are official in the Swiss, German and Austrian Pharmacopoeias and as Althaea Folia in the National Formulary.

A war broke out between the Calydonians and Curetes (led by Althaeas brothers) about the disposal of the head and skin, which Meleager awarded as a prize to Atalanta, who had inflicted the first wound; the brothers of Althaea lay in wait for Atalanta and robbed her of the spoils, but were slain by Meleager.
When Althaea heard this, she cursed Meleager, who withdrew, and refused to fight until the Curetes were on the point of capturing the city of Calydon.
According to a later tradition, not known to Homer, the Moerae appeared to Althaea when Meleager was seven days old, and axinounced that the child would only live as long as the log blazing on the hearth remained unconsumed.
