  Rocket Altimeter
The altimeter measures the air pressure surrounding the rocket.
The altimeter will continue to save the data, until it runs out of memory (about 5 minutes after launch), or until the air pressure returns to the previous ground level point; in which case it assumes the rocket has made a landing on the ground.
Even though the altimeter can be mounted firmly in the rocket, it is small enough and lightweight enough that it can also be slip it into a padded tube for quick installation into the rocket.

An altimeter watch is a wristop instrument that allows the wearer to determine their current elevation.
This is why many altimeter watches feature "temperature compensation," and why the altimeter must to be calibrated regularly (by simply entering the current barometric pressure or setting to a known altitude).
Pilots of small planes often wear an altimeter watch as a back-up in case of instrument failure - although be aware that an altimeter of this type cannot be used successfully in a pressurized plane.

 Altimeter | World of Invention
The aneroid altimeter derives a quantity for altitude by measuring the decreasing air pressure that occurs with increase in altitude, while a radio altimeter bounces a radio signal from an object aloft to the ground and determines the distance aloft as a function of the time it takes for the signal to return.
The surface of the compartment bulges or contracts slightly as the outside air pressure changes, and the movements of the compartment are indicated on a needle which is connected to the box by a chain, lever, and springs.
A drawback of the aneroid altimeter is its sensitivity to weather conditions.

 Altimeter Summary
The altimeter is calibrated to show the pressure directly as altitudes, in accordance with a mathematical model defined by the International Standard Atmosphere (ISA).
An altimeter cannot, however, be adjusted for variations in air temperature.
Radar altimeters are also a component of terrain avoidance warning systems, telling the pilot that the aircraft is flying too low or that terrain is rising to meet the aircraft.

 What is an Altimeter?
An altimeter is a altitude measurement device used by mountaineers, skydivers, pilots, satellites, and many others.
The altimeter’s general purpose is to tell its human or machine user how elevated from sea level it is. It performs this function via one of two ways – either by measuring the local air pressure using a barometer, or by bouncing radar off a target.
A high precision radar altimeter works by measuring the transit time of a radio wave between a target and an airplane or satellite.

The Low-Down on Altimeter Settings   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Incorrect altimeter settings are a direct cause of altitude deviations, some of them severe enough to result in near mid-air collisions and controlled flight toward terrain.
The altimeter showed a setting on impact of 30.05; the correct setting would be about 29.22, causing the altimeter to read about 800-850 feet high.
Altimeter was set at 29.84, and should have been set at 28.84.

 Barometric Altimeter - MB Wiki
The altimeter will detect your change in altitude based on the change in the atmospheric pressure (the higher you go the less pressure).
The problem with a barometric altimeter is the requirement to calibrate it every time you start your activity.
Absolute location is provided originally by the satellite to help auto-calibrate the barometric altimeter, then the barometric altimeter is used to provide a more stable elevation change.

Unless specifically requested by the pilot, the altimeter setting need not be issued to local aircraft operators who have requested this omission in writing or to scheduled air carriers.
The tower may omit the altimeter if the aircraft is sequenced or vectored to the airport by the approach control having jurisdiction at that facility.
If the altimeter setting must be obtained by the pilot of an arriving aircraft from another source, instruct the pilot to obtain the altimeter setting from that source.

Altimeter height residuals   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Altimeter height residuals are a means to monitor the radial orbit error, although part of the residuals are caused by the fact that the reference surface will not be a perfect representation of the actual instantaneous mean sea level.
From analyses of the altimeter residuals it appeared that the origin of the MSS93A model is offset from the actual orbital reference frame imposed by the SLR station coordinates.
A mean height residual of 39.3 cm is found, which is compatible with the -41.5 cm radar altimeter bias determined from the ``Venice calibration'' [Francis et al., 1993].
