  Hypobaric Altitude Chamber
This was one of the officers assigned to the chamber unit and trained specifically in the operation of the chamber and the effects of flight.
Chamber flights were never started until the PTO was in the chamber room and ready to go, and they requested permission from flight doc to begin the flight.
The door separating the two chambers was closed, the two chamber operators manipulated the atmospheric pressures, and the flier was on their way to a simulated altitude of over 60,000 ft. while the observers on the other side of the glass stayed at between 15,000 and 20,000.

 Altitude Training for Sea-Level Competition
Living and training at altitude is less effective than living at altitude and training near sea level, because the lack of oxygen at altitude results in detraining through reduction in intensity of training.
The effect occurs in mountaineers at high altitudes (MacDougall et al., 1991), but it's not clear whether it's a risk for athletes living at altitudes of about 3000 m and training low, or whether it could be detected by suitable measurement of muscle mass.
Altitude chambers, nitrogen houses and nitrogen tents would be dangerous if the simulated altitude was high enough and long enough to raise the thickness of blood to an unsafe level.

CYCLING PERFORMANCE TIPS - training at altitude
Although the primary cause of these symptoms is related to the reduced oxygen content and humidity of the ambient air at high altitudes, the physiologic pathway relating hypoxemia to AMS and its sequelae remains unclear.
The capillary concentration in skeletal muscle is increased in animals living at altitude compared to those at sea level, and muscle biopsies in acclimatized men have demonstrated an increase in myoglobin, mitochondria, and metabolic enzymes necessary for aerobic energy transfer.
An altitude of 2500 to 2800 meters maintains a balance between stimulating erythropoietin and minimizing the effects of acute mountain sickness that occur with increasing frequency at higher elevations.

Although the effect of altitude has been studied only on a specific PFM (Mini-Wright), all PFMs based on technologies affected by gas density should be affected by changes in altitude.[4] The magnitude of the altitude effect, however, may not be the same for other PFM models.
Simulated altitudes were obtained by decreasing the pressure in the hypobaric chamber to a pressure that represented the target altitude.

Another way to simulate altitude is to reduce the partial pressure of oxygen in the air you breathe, without changing the air pressure.
Instead of 21 percent oxygen, your room is stabilized closer to 12 percent oxygen (it varies, depending on the altitude of your house), to simulate 15,000 feet -- all for about $14,500.

The hyperbaric chamber is not suitable for prevention or treatment of mild AMS because it prevents or at least slows down acclimatization.
It is a common belief that a portable hyperbaric chamber must be carried at least on every commercial altitude trip on legal grounds (liability of the organizer) although to date neither particular legal rules have been published nor has litigation been instituted.
A portable hyperbaric chamber should especially be considered when visiting an area where there is no possibility of quick and easy descent to lower altitudes.
