Topic: Alto Rhapsody

  5186045
Rhapsody for Alto, Male Chorus and Orchestra, Op.
In the final part, the male choir at last enters, not only introducing a new quality of tone, but also collectively providing the alto solo with a sense of security; the glowing key of C major is chosen, a hymnic tone is tapped.
Alto Yvonne Naef’s rich, dusky voice is just right for the Alto Rhapsody, and the male choir matches her in spirit and style.”

  Alto
alto or contralto is a singer with a vocal range somewhere between a tenor and a mezzo-soprano.
Alto pieces were originally written in the alto clef, but now use the treble clef.
The word, "alto", is often applied to instruments to indicate their range in relation to other instruments of the same group.

BRAHMS Alto Rhapsody etc Helen Watts [JW]: Classical CD Reviews- July2002 MusicWeb(UK)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The Alto Rhapsody and Nanie were themselves first issued on Decca in 1967 and Shirley-Quirk’s songs on Argo in 1971.
Maybe the strings are a touch metallic in the Alto Rhapsody — a fault of the recording I think rather than the Suisse Romande — but there is rich compensation in the shape of Ansermet’s acute Brahmsian instincts (both here and in the still undervalued Nanie he displays a rich palette of gifts).
The Alto Rhapsody strikes me as maintaining an inherently honest balance between the exterior and interior elements of the score.

The Second Symphony is the most sunny and lyrical of the four, and Abbado seems to have found a way to make the melodies sing while keeping the music moving along nicely.
The coupling, a marvelous Alto Rhapsody, features Marjana Lipovsek, a terrific singer who doesn't seem to get her due on recordings.
The beautifully-sung Alto Rhapsody is a great bonus, and the Variations on a Theme by Haydn (that isn't really by Haydn) is also richly played.

CHORAL REVIEW: Tasty B&B By Lisa Hirsch (San Francisco Choral Society, Wendy Hillhouse, April 3, 2004)
The overall excellence of the group itself was clear from the first note to the last, in their firm tone and good diction, their responsiveness to director Robert Geary, their attention to the music and to each other.
And the program itself was attractive, combining Brahms's Alto Rhapsody (for male chorus, with soloist Wendy Hillhouse), Ave Maria (for female chorus), and Schicksalslied (Song of Fate) with Beethoven's 1807 Mass in C. The three Brahms works are done less often than his Requiem, but they're cut from the same musical cloth.
Hillhouse returned as the splendid alto soloist in the Beethoven, where she was joined by soprano Jennifer Brody, tenor Jeffrey Barnett, and bass-baritone Boyd Jarrell.

The Alto Rhapsody, on the other hand, has strong biographical implications related to a crisis in its composer’s life.
But first, the origin of the text: In 1777, the 27-year-old Goethe was already among Europe’s most influential literary figures, his celebrity achieved two years earlier with his novel about unrequited passion, The Sorrows of Young Werther, which would become a sort of bible of despair for young lovers.
The declamatory opening of the Rhapsody, in C minor, sets the physical scene, man alone amid menacing nature, with nothing but contempt for his fellow men.

Brahms: Rinaldo; Alto Rhapsody; Gesang der Parzen, Larsson/ Andersen/ Danish National Choir and Symphony Orch/ Albrecht
Though Brahms never composed an opera, two of his early works give clues as to what might have been: the song-cycle Die Schone Magelone and the Cantata Rinaldo, both reflecting his dilemma on breaking off his engagement to Agathe von Siebold in 1859.
It is very well coupled with two other Goethe settings by Brahms, the radiant Alto Rhapsody, with Anna Larsson the rich-toned soloist, and the greatest and darkest of his shorter choral works, Gesang der Parzen, Song of the Fates.

And while there have been numerous box sets of Brahms' symphonies by many of the world's (and America's) great orchestras, perhaps the most interesting one was the one made for Virgin Classics in the early 1990s by the Houston Symphony Orchestra under its then-Music Director Christoph Eschenbach.
53--Composed in 1870, the Alto Rhapsody is one of many short one-movement works for chorus and orchestra that Brahms composed in his time.
All the symphonies and their four companions are given superb performances by the Houston Symphony under Eschenbach's taut direction (with alto vocalist Dunja Vejzovic and the Houston Symphony Men's Chorus featured in the Alto Rhapsody).

Variations on a Theme | Romanticism from the canvas to the printing press to the opera house
In the piano music, for example, which chronologically encircles his vocal output, the dividing lines beteen ballade and rhapsody, and capriccio and intermezzo, are vague, such terms refer more to expressive character than to musical form.
As in other media, his most important development technique in the piano music is variation, whether used independently (simple melodic alteration and thematic cross-reference) or to create a large integrated cycle in which successive variations contain their own thematic transformation (as in the Handel Variations).
Between these large choral works and the many a cappella ones showing his informed appreciation of Renaissance and Baroque polyphony (he was a diligent collector, scholar and editor of old music) stand the justly popular Zigeunerlieder (in modified gypsy style) and the landler-like Liebeslieder waltzes with piano accompaniment.

Biddulph Recordings is an offshoot of a famous violin shop in London, which began to acquire archive recordings of great string players such as Fritz Kreisler and William Primrose, and to release them on CD.
They have outdone themselves this time, with an inspired pairing of performances by Primrose, the most renowned violist of the 20th century, and Marian Anderson, the greatest singer ever to come from the U.S. The Primrose recordings are the two Brahms viola sonatas, recorded in 1937 and 1946.
Primrose, who epitomized Paul Doktor's doctrine of the viola as a "Bel Canto" instrument, found in Marian Anderson an ideal partner; the great songs of Brahms are transfigured by the remarkable intimacy of these two performers.

The compositions of Johannes Brahms have never gone completely out of fashion, and for good reason; his is well-crafted music, romantic but never slushy, well considered, and important without being pompous.
His orchestral songs, with the possible exception of the "Alto Rhapsody," are not nearly as well known as they deserve to be, and many people think of him primarily for his symphonies.
