  Alto and bass flutes
The modern bass flute in C came into being in the 1920's as an extension of the flute family.
The nature of both alto and bass flutes, with the larger bore and less penetrating sound, dictates that the music cannot be as technically demanding as that written for the C flute.
The possibilities of the alto and bass flutes are that they extend the flute range in the lower sounds, and are especially interesting for flute ensembles and flute choirs.

A flute is an aerophone that is played by blowing air across a sharp edge in the mouthpiece of the instrument.
The flute family is a large family of instruments that includes widely-recognized instruments such as the orchestral flute and piccolo, panpipes, and recorders, as well as unusual instruments such as nose flutes and ocarinas.
The two major families of flutes are the blow hole aerophones, in which the mouth must direct the air stream toward one edge of a blow hole, and the whistle mouthpiece aerophones, in which the player blows into a whistle-type mouthpiece that directs the air toward a sharp edge.

Dayton C. Miller Flute Collection: Flute Misnomers
What is now called the alto flute, which usually is in G and sounds a fourth lower than written, was often called the "bass" flute.
However, unlike the brass band instruments in flat keys which transpose as expected, the E-flat, B-flat, and F flutes of the flute band are actually in D-flat, A-flat, and E-flat respectively, and their parts are therefore transposed as such.
However, such C flutes were often termed D flutes due to the basic scale centered on the original lowest written note, D. The practice of designating the pitch of the flute and fife one tone higher than the actual key lasted into the twentieth century, especially among wind bands.
