Alto horn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Known in the U.S. as alto horn, in Germany as althorn, and in the UK as tenor horn, this brass instrument pitched in Eb has a conical bore (gradually widening), and normally uses a deep, cornet-like mouthpiece.
Most alto horns are pitched in Eb and are transposing instruments.
Alto horns are very free-blowing instruments and intermediate players should be able to reach the high register (from the F above middle C onwards).

 Horn History 4
Compensating horns are more difficult for some players to play in tune, but others prefer them because of their lighter weight - a result of the fact that there is much less tubing in the compensating horn than in a full double.
Because the length of an F horn is longer than a B-flat horn, there is another set of three short slides (one on each valve) to "compensate" for the different length of the F horn.
Soon a B-flat/F alto double horn was also created, which allowed the player to use the B-flat side for most of the range and the F alto side for the extreme high notes.

Uniqhorns ~ French Horn Mellophone discussion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Three valves are common in the single horn, four in the modern double horn, having two sets of tubings for each of the three main valves, switched by the fourth valve.
In dire conditions the horn could be dropped back over the arm and shoulder to allow the hornsman to draw a weapon with his right hand while still controlling the horse with his left.
With the double horn, he crafted an instrument having a fourth valve that routed the air through shorter tubing that changed the entire pitch of the horn from F to Bb.  Today, the double horn is the most commonly used horn worldwide.

Transposing - How to do it, and why do it!
If the second pair of horns is pitched a minor third above tonic, in this case C, minor intervals played by a horn in A and a horn in C would come out with both notes being open.
The principal horn looks at the score and tries his part out a little, and knowing that a part in A basso would be extremely rare, is going to play his part by reading it up a major third, thereby placing the horn in a better-sounding range when playing with the winds.
The music is ALL written, "In the key of C for the horn in D" (eg, Haydn's Italian symphony) and then, without key signature, the 4th part is asked to "change to A", whereupon the key signature is "In the key of C for the horn in A".

Tenor Horn - Morecambe Brass Band Association   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The tenor horn has a conical bore like the orchestral (french) horn and uses deep funnel or cup shaped mouthpieces depending on the model.
When this instrument was first used in the UK, it was called a Tenor Horn instead of an alto as advertised in Sax's catalogue, because the cornet was concidered an alto instrument in the UK when it was called a soprano in the US.
It was invented as a tenor (or alto in the US) voice in the saxhorn family invented in the mid-1800s by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian who is best remembered for the saxophone.

The latest development is the Model 45, which isessentially the same instrument but with narrower cylindrical tubing on the f-alto horn, which enhances the sound quality and equalises the resistance of the two sides.
