Topic: Alton Locke

  Chartism
In his introduction to Alton Locke, Lodge declares that while Kingsley shows keen sympathy for the workers' conditions of employment and general social plight, he is also critical of their general modes of reacting against established authority.
Though much of Alton Locke, according to Muller, reads as a political tract and Alton himself is represented through most of the novel as a dangerous agitator, a dramatic change occurs at the end with Alton renouncing his subversive views and embracing religion as a solution.
Alton Locke may be viewed not primarily as a Chartist novel but as an expression of Kingsley's Christian work on behalf of the poorer classes.

Multivocality in Kingsley's Alton Locke   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Alton's escape from the tailors' workroom' through the bookshop makes the mimicry of modes convincing; the tailor-poet makes himself many sets of new clothes.
Alton's sardonic and world-weary tone deepens throughout the novel, as he verifies that competition inevitably works against the poor and laboring classes.
His witness as a narrator and as a poet exposes the inequities he deplores, but his unusual position as a tailor-poet prevents him from ever being an actor in that world; he has risen out of his own class without becoming part of a different class.

 Alton Locke
Alton personifies the two extremes of, on the one hand, wishing to remain faithful to his working class origins and, on the other, his desire to become one of the middle class.
The moral of Alton Locke is not that he should adopt such working class features as Chartism and trade unionism and eschew middle class values, nor is it that he should remain fixed in his working class milieu and never seek to improve himself.
In particular, Alton Locke is important for “historians of London’s East End because it portrays vividly and, as far as one can tell, reliably, the conditions of the sweated tailors of this district in the middle of the nineteenth century” (37).

 Charles Kingsley - LoveToKnow Watches
With the sympathetic organization which made him keenly sensible of the wants of the poor, he threw himself heartily into the movement known as Christian Socialism, of which Frederick Denison Maurice was the recognized leader, and for many years he was considered as an extreme radical in a profession the traditions of which were conservative.
While in this phase he wrote his novels Yeast and Alton Locke, in which, though he pointed out unsparingly the folly of extremes, he certainly sympathized not only with the poor, but with much that was done and said by the leaders in the Chartist movement.
Yet even then he considered that the true leaders of the people were a peer and a dean, and there was no real inconsistency in the fact that at a later period he was among the most strenuous defenders of Governor Eyre in the measures adopted by him to put down the Jamaican disturbances.

Chapter 7. The Pisgah Sight -- Extended Versions
Locke's powerful indictment of the way England treats her workers, which draws heavily upon Carlyle's "Chartism" (1839) and Past and Present (1843), closes with an ironic call to the English clergy for leadership.
Locke argues implicitly that both owners and workers, rich and poor, follow false gods: the desperate working and unworking poor worship only "hatred of the things which are" and as they become less hopeful of improving their painful lot, they inevitably become attracted to violent solutions.
Alton Locke's various skillful intonations of this biblical type suggest its range of literary possibilities.

Alton Locke, Tailor and Poet, was published in 1850, in the midst of great social unrest, and a strong strain upon its author due to his exertions towards meeting some of the causes of this widespread popular perturbation.
The direct bearing of the attack upon the abuses of a typical town trade, from a picture of whose conditions the narrative starts, was attested by its effects, more especially in the partial adoption of the system of association—on behalf of which, as Kingsley emphasised in 1854, working men themselves failed to take sufficient trouble.

One striking feature of these conclusions is the leading role women play: their inventions contain a utopian dream of a woman-led society without classes and competition.
By carefully examining narrative in seven novels: Charles Dickens's Hard Times, Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South and Mary Barton, Benjamin Disraeli's Sybil, Charles Kingsley's Alton Locke, Frances Trollope's Michael Armstrong, and Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna's Helen Fleetwood, this study explores the means by which female characters gain public power and the millenarian implications of their activities.
This study departs from recent work in two important ways: it maintains its focus on the novels rather than on the nonfictional condition-of-England debate, and it emphasizes the consistency of the genre's approach to the contemporary crisis of class relations.

Contextual analysis can illuminate texts in many important ways.
For example, if you were to make a serious study of Charles Kingsley's novel Alton Locke (1850) -- completly setting aside the religious or domestic dimensions of that novel -- you would need to have a good grasp of the political situation in Britain during1848, when the novel is set.
On the other hand, you would need to consider how the ruling classes saw this eruption of protest among the working classes and sought to retain control for themselves, and the means they used to do so.
