The first railroad through Chatham was the Alton and Sangamon Railroad, chartered by the Illinois General Assembly in 1847 to build a railroad from Alton to Springfield by way of Carlinville and New Berlin where it would connect with the Northern Cross, Illinois' first railroad, using their track to enter Springfield.
In 1851 the General Assembly authorized the Alton and Sangamon to construct their railroad using the most direct route from Carlinville to Springfield, thus paving the way for the railroad to go through Chatham.
The first train from Alton to Springfield went through Chatham on September 9, 1852, but by then the railroad's name had been changed to Chicago and Mississippi.

ALTON, Iowa -- A fatal crash of two Union Pacific Railroad trains in northwest Iowa Wednesday night could have been prevented by technology designed to automatically stop trains on a collision course, federal safety officials said Thursday.
According to the Omaha World-Herald, National Transportation Safety Board officials said the accident five miles south of Alton wouldn't have happened if the railroad had been using the special safety equipment.
ALTON, Iowa (AP) -- A freight train from Minnesota slammed head-on into an empty grain train near this small northwest Iowa town, killing a conductor and the driver of a van that was parked by the tracks, officials said Thursday.

There was a railroad from Chicago to Galena, called the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad, and south of it, at a distance of thirty miles West of Chicago, was an ambitious little town called Aurora, which, in 1852, desired a branch to connect it with the main line at Turner Station.
If afford the means of ingress and egress to twenty-two railroads; it owns, for the common, joint use of thse railroads, the lasgest and finest Union passenger station existing, and it furnishes freight facilities, storage yards and warehouses for all the vast tonnage that these twenty-two roads bring into and out of St. Louis.
In this dilemma it was concluded to form outside auxiliary railroads companies under the general corporation laws of Missouri and Illinois, and to enter into traffic contracts between them and the bridge company for the performance of railway service between St. Louis and East St. Louis.

 Alton, Illinois - Civil War Era - Confederate Prison
The Alton prison opened in 1833 as the first Illinois State Penitentiary and was closed in 1860, when the last prisoners were moved to a new facility at Joliet.
A cemetery in North Alton that belonged to the State of Illinois was used for most that died.
The first prisoners arrived at the Alton Federal Military Prison on February 9, 1862 and members of the 13 th U.S. Infantry were assigned as guards, with Colonel Sidney Burbank commanding.

A scant few years after emancipation that the first Memorial Day celebration in the United States was held in Alton; the current celebration, beginning in 1868, is the oldest consecutive Memorial Day Parade in the United States.

 ALTON & PACIFIC STEAM RAILROAD
The Alton and Pacific was a 24" gauge steam railroad operated from 1968 until 1989 by Frank Bayliss, a Los Angeles native and lifelong railfan.
It saw service as NWP maintenance-of-way car #259 for a number of years, and for a while was used as a home by a railroad worker in Eureka near the "balloon track." It was trucked to Alton in 1975, but despite some unsuccessful attempts at refurbishment it is obviously in very poor condition today.
Visually, the boiler and steam engines have been removed and replaced with the diesel powerplant and a hood that extends from the front of the cab to the front of the engine.

Well, these are two lines from my home area, Alton/Wood River.
The line on the left (of the two going up the picture, not across) is the inner line (passenger line) of the layout.

In the later part of the year 1899 that part of the St. Louis, Peoria & Northern Railway lying between Springfield and Peoria passed into the control of the Chicago & Alton Railway Company, and is now a part of that system.
It might be supposed that the road was conceived and built for the purpose of connecting the two great cities of Chicago and St. Louis, with Alton as a way station, but it was not.
