Altona Forest is one of the few large areas remaining, adjacent to Lake Ontario, where migrating birds have the protection of forest cover for resting and feeding during migration (1).
The Altona Forest is the home to a great variety of plant and animal life including a large number of migratory and nesting birds.
Altona Forest is the one of the last urban forests in southern Ontario, and home to white-tailed deer, red foxes, coyotes, wood duck, ruffed grouse, great-horned owl, pileated woodpecker and fascinating pond creatures such as fairy shrimp and wood frogs.

The Altona Forest is situated in the City of Pickering just east of Toronto in Ontario, Canada.
In 1998 the Altona Forest Community Stewardship Committee was established with representatives from ratepayers groups, concerned citizens, Pickering Naturalists and other interested groups, the City of Pickering and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
It stretches as a ridge of hilly terrain for 160 kilometres from the Niagara Escarpment in the west to the headwaters of the Trent River in the east.

Malcolm was a first class carpenter, but at the time of their marriage was working on construction for the railroad on a double track from Port Arthur to Fort William.
The actual marriage record at Ontario Archives shows that the marriage occured on March 19, 1902.
The birthdate for their first son James is 1901 which may explain the reason for this claim.

The agreement is subject to regulatory approval in both Canada and the U.S., and is expected to be finalized by July 31, 2002.
The increase is due largely to expanded capacity at the Howson and Howson Ltd. plant in Blyth, Ontario, and the Robin Hood plant in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

A two-time Master Breeder herd, Altona Lea Farms is operated by Frank and Donna Barkey and their son Glenn and his wife Karen and their family and their daughter Carolyn and her husband Frazer Puterbough.

This judging competition, held yearly, was designed in 1989 to train 4-H’ers in the correct conformation of dairy animals, help in their decision making process and develop confidence while defending their decisions.
From this competition, four people are selected to represent Ontario at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Competition in Madison, Wisconsin, during the World Dairy Expo.
4-Her's from around Ontario not only had the opportunity to learn more about judging dairy cattle but were also able to make friends and compete with fellow 4-H members.

 MRTA - Trans Canada Trails
The spur was completed last year and is an exceptionally well built trail that is receiving a lot of year round use.
An estimated 250 people joined the water carriers on the stretch of trail between West Hawk Lake and the Ontario border walking or cycling behind a horse drawn wagon of musicians who kept up a living beat.
From Altona to the village of Gretna the trail will run along the abandoned rail line for about 12 kms.

In the fall of 1794, Johann Niclaus Stöber / John Stiver came to Markham Township, York County, Ontario with his wife Anna and their children.
The Stöber family were part of a group, consisting of approximately 60 families who, under the leadership of William Berczy, left from the port of Altona, Germany in May and June 1792 to begin a new life in the Genesee area of New York State, USA.
It was while I was attending the Ontario Genealogical Society Seminar, Toronto, ON in 1993, that I discovered my connection to the Stiver family.

Commercial Alcohols Inc. is planning to produce 120 million litres (ML) of ethanol per year once their plant in Varennes, Quebec is completed, and an expansion of the Chatham, Ontario plant is expected to increase output by about 150 ML annually.
In addition, Seaway Grain Processors Inc. is going ahead with plans to build a plant in Cornwall, Ontario capable of producing 66 ML of ethanol annually.

As only one case of a Blue Jay was listed, we felt that our observation might be of in- terest.
Margaret Wilson first noted a Blue Jay (Cyanositta cristata) at the Speirs' feeder in Pickering, Ontario, Canada, that had a deformed "crossed" bill on 22 June 1993.At that time, it was noted that both man- dibles appeared thinner and slightly longer than normal.
This bird also feeds on the window sill, about an arm's distance away from where we sit watching from inside the house.
