Altona's southern boundary is Skeleton Creek (separating it from Werribee), and its opposite boundary is Kororoit Creek (separating it from Williamstown).
Altona was a destination for many postwar European migrants, and temporary and hostel accommodation was provided at the Williamstown racecourse and later on land on the other side of the Kororoit Creek at Wiltona Hostel.
The census populations for the Altona township were 50 (1911), 694 (1921) and 2,841 (1947).

Svenska Brandförsäkringsbolaget Svea was formed in Altona, Illinois in 1868 by Swedish immigrant farmers in Knox and Henry County.
After many of the farmers had been approached to purchase insurances by American agents they were not able to understand, they felt the need start their own company with agents that spoke Swedish.
Svea’s first meeting was held in Altona on January 23,1869, at which time the by-laws were approved and incorporated.

 The Water Connoisseur: Public Commodity to Personal Symbol
It started in Paisley Scotland, 1804 when John Gibb constructed the first water filtering system by the town's reservoir using concentric circles of sand to sieve the dirty water.
He built this for his bleachery, but demand from the township encouraged him to sell his surplus house-to-house by cart.
This contrary phenomenon was revealed to be due to the township of Altona installing a municipal sand filtering system that removed most of the pathogens even though their water was more polluted.
